Mason stood in the tunnel tugging at his football socks, Declan was convinced if he yanked them any harder they would rip. "Just chill" Declan mumbled, tapping his best friend on the shoulder. "She's back I the county and hasn't said a word to me" Mason mumbled, as he stood up straight, turning to face his friend. "I wouldn't talk to you either" Jack mumbled, as Ben rolled his eyes at his teammates. "You need to focus, this is exactly why she said she didn't want to be in a relationship" Ben mumbled, as Declan nodded his head, agreeing with what Ben was saying. "Lauren wouldn't tell me if she was here" Declan mumbled, as Mason nodded his head, taking some deep breaths, as the roar of the Wembley crowd was the only thing to be heard.
Meanwhile, Lacey, Sasha and Lauren stood in the stands, it didn't feel so long ago that they stood there for the first time as a group, watching the boys play like their lives depended on it. "I really don't want to be here" Lacey mumbled, as she watched the boys in white walk out, instantly seeing number 19 and feeling her heart drop. "It's one match, one game, you're here for the others, think of it that way" Lauren sympathised as the national anthem started, and they sang along, clapping for the boys as the whistle blew, and the game kicked off.
It wasn't long before Jesse Lingard knocked a goal in, the crowd erupting in cheers, the whole of Wembley buzzing once again.
It was a good match to watch, well, Lacey thought that until the substitute was announced and Mason stepped on the pitch, Lacey not knowing where to advert her eyes to as they announced his name."So Jacks birthday" Lacey mumbled, doing anything she could to take her eyes from the pitch, following him around. "Erm yeah, I think we're doing a meal and a couple of drinks, nothing too big" Sasha smiled, her eyes following the boys on the pitch. Dec wasn't playing, and the reasoning behind it wasn't clear, just that Gareth had decided not to play some of the bigger names, maybe resting them up for the next match.
"So are we going for usual drinks after?" Lauren questioned, as Lacey shook her head. "I'm gonna head to the studio" Lacey whispered, as Lauren nodded her head, knowing not to argue with the younger girl. "They won't be coming yano, Southgate won't release them with another match to play" Sasha whispered, as Lacey nodded her head. "I know, but his good at sneaking out" Lacey mumbled, but the smile was on her face.
She wanted to hate him for no reason, there was no reason to hate him, she had only pushed him away far enough for the metaphorical band to snap, knowing that she was the reason he had done what she knew would happen. She didn't want the relationship, and Mason wouldn't wait forever.
As the match drew to a close, a win for England, the boys celebrating around the pitch, Lacey, Lauren and Sasha all decided to start the walk back to the carpark, knowing how busy it got from previous matches.
But as Lacey walked down the hallway, she felt someone's arms around her waist, pulling her into the open room, her eyes landing on the brown ones that she had dreaded to come face to face with.
"Lace" he whispered, as she looked up at him. He looked tired and drained, but she leant towards the more physical option considering he had just been running around a pitch, the sweat still evident on his face. "Please don't hate me" he whispered, as he put a hand to her face, holding her cheek so she would actually look at him instead of around the room. "I don't hate you, I just want you to be happy" Lacey forced a smile, as Mason shook his head sighing. "Well I'm not" Mason mumbled, his hand still holding her face. "It was a mistake, I didn't mean for it to happen, I was annoyed and hurt and one thing led to another" Mason started, but Lacey moved his hand from her face, looking up at him without his help. "You don't need to say anything, you can do what you want to do, we're not together" Lacey whispered, as Mason nodded his head, figuring that it was pointless having this conversation. "Are you going to Jacks meal?" She questioned, trying to form a conversation that didn't involve talking about them. Mason shook his head. "He won't even look at me in the changing room, and he has a comment for everything, so I doubt it" Mason whispered, as Lacey nodded her head. "I need to go, the girls will be waiting" Lacey whispered, as Mason sighed, nodding his head, and watching as Lacey gave him a small smile, before leaving him stood in the room.
"Why did you fuck it all up" Mason muttered to himself, pulling on his hair, as he walked got the changing room, ignoring the congratulations from the officials, his mind only focused on how he could get Lacey back.
Lacey walked to the carpark, her own mind playing tricks on her, wondering if she had been too harsh on him, knowing that it was all her fault in the long run.
The truth was, they stated out as a casual hook up, and along the way they turned into a couple, without the label because that suited both of them. Both of them craving the other when they needed them instead.
Lacey wasn't aware of everything Mason had done, up until it was just a distant memory, Lacey didn't realise that Mason had given her life again.
Mason didn't realise that he cared too much about her to let her go, not thinking that he would fall for her, or want her in the long run, regretting the choices he had made to lead them to where they were, but he didn't exactly keep his feelings quiet either.Authors Note;
