Chapter 173: Weight of the Worlds
Clayton glared daggers at Rogers, as he sat across from him in the interrogation room, clearly on the phone with David and giving him a smug look.
"That's great David...I'm glad everyone is okay," he said, as he listened.
"Yes...he's still in custody and since it's late, I doubt he'll go before a judge until morning," he stated.
"You too...and please tell your wife how grateful I am that you both are taking Tilly in. I...I feel better that she's not on the streets," he said, though he couldn't explain why this one girl had affected him so deeply.
"I'll see you tomorrow," Rogers said, as he hung up the phone and smiled smugly at the Collector.
"Well...I guess I know why your attorney, Mr. Branson, hasn't shown up to your defense. My partner and our Captain just arrested him for murder, attempted murder, and kidnapping. Interesting company you keep, Mr. Stavros," Rogers stated.
"Branson is an idiot anyway. I'm sure my daughter is finding me another lawyer that will have me out in no time," Clayton retorted. Rogers smirked.
"But not before morning. Good thing I have the perfect little dank holding cell for you to sleep in tonight," the detective responded.
"Enjoy your victory tonight, Detective, for it will be short lived. I am an innocent man and I'll be walking free by breakfast," he assured.
"We'll see, won't we?" Rogers goaded, as he motioned to the officers outside the interrogation room.
"Please take Mr. Stavros to a holding cell until his attorney arrives," he said, as the Collector was escorted to his cell. As he was, he passed Weaver, who was personally escorting Nick Branson into custody. Weaver put Nick in the interrogation room and closed the door. Rogers watched the man sit there with a deadened look in his eyes.
"Do you need me to stick around for the interrogation?" he asked.
"No...go home. Stavros will be arraigned in the morning and you'll need to be there as arresting officer. It's important to keep him locked up if we can," Weaver replied.
"But you don't think we can," Rogers surmised.
"Cassidy Gold can testify that it was Stavors that ordered his thugs to kill him and with this being such a high profile case that includes Detective Nolan's wife's captivity and Stavros involvement, I don't doubt that a grand jury will indict. But I doubt we'll be granted remand and he'll make bail," Weaver responded.
"Then you think he'll try to flea?" Rogers questioned.
"No...he'll be out for blood. Detective Nolan's family and everyone associated with them will be in potential danger," Weaver stated gravely. Rogers was silent for a moment.
"All the more reason that we need to fight back. David and his wife don't seem like the types to back down from a fight," he said.
"Oh they won't...they're all in," Weaver replied.
"And so am I...this slime ball separated a mother from her children. A wife from her husband...he's as dirty as they come. I want to see him go down," Rogers agreed. Weaver smirked. The Captain was stirring inside him, even more so now with Tilly and Emma so near.
"Then prepare for battle, Detective Rogers," Weaver replied. Rogers took another look at the serial killer they had just caught and then made his way out for the night.
Weaver posted a guard on the door to the interrogation room, before going to start the paperwork to process Branson. Once the corridor was empty, there was a noise that seemed to catch the guard's attention. His eyes glazed and he walked away, allowing Baron Samdi to slip into the hallway and into the room where Nick was being held.
