(Y/N) AND SAM sat side by side on one of the church's benches in the funeral ceremony for Peggy Carter. Since neither of them wanted to leave Steve alone in a moment like this, they went with him.

(Y/N) felt a knot on her throat when she saw Steve walking down the aisle as he carried the casket with the help of others. Once the casket was carefully placed on the end of the aisle, Steve joined Sam and (Y/N), the latter holding on to his hand for the rest of the ceremony.

"And now, I would like to invite Sharon Carter to come up and say a few words," the priest announced softly.

Sharon Carter walked up to the front and stood behind the podium, taking a shaky breath.

"Margaret Carter was known most as a founder of S.H.I.E.L.D. , but I just knew her as Aunt Peggy," Sharon began, and (Y/N) barely saw the way Steve looked up when he heard that statement.

"She had a photograph in her office. Aunt Peggy standing next to JFK. As a kid, that was pretty cool. But it was a lot to live up to. Which is why I never told anyone we were related."

"I asked her once how she managed to master diplomacy and espionage in a time when no one wanted to see a woman succeed at either," Sharon continued.

"She said, compromise where you can. But where you can't, don't. Even if everyone is telling you that something wrong is something right. Even if the whole world is telling you to move. . .it is your duty to plant yourself like a tree. . .look them in the eye and say 'No, you move.'"

THE CEREMONY ENDED a few minutes after that speech, and the groups of people in black mourning their comrade, friend or family member left the church  with heavy hearts, but Steve wasn't one of them as (Y/N) stayed behind, leaving Sam outside, wanting to give them some time for themselves.

Steve leaned back to one of the benches as he looked down to his feet. "When I came out of the ice, I thought everyone I had known was gone. Then I found out she was alive."

"I'm sure she was relieved to have you back too," (Y/N) reassured. "I wish I could've met her."

"She would've loved you," Steve replied with honesty.

(Y/N) faintly smiled. "You think so? I heard much about her when I first joined."

Steve didn't reply while his gaze was back to his shoes, his eyes still being glassy from the tears he was fighting back.
