STEVE LAID IN the rubble unconscious, the dust from the remains of the compound staining his face as his chest slowly rose up and down to pull air into his lungs. Tony, who had regained his consciousness a few minutes ago, made his way towards him with a slow pace.
'Steve, you have to wake up,' he heard a voice say, but the sound didn't ring in his ears, it sounded like an echo in his head. He didn't process where the sentence came from before he heard a different one, louder and clearer this time.
"Come on, buddy, wake up!"
Steve gasped and opened his eyes with a look of shock in his face, seeing how Tony was standing on his side with his shield in hand.
"That's my man," Tony said. "You lose this again, I'm keeping it."
Steve groaned and scanned his surroundings, pieces of concrete and rubble sitting all around him. "What happened?"
"You mess with time, it tends to mess back," Tony muttered and extended a hand. "You'll see."
Him and Steve walked away from the crumbling space and searched for any sort of light, which led them to an escape of the fallen compound. Thor was already standing there, not uttering a word as he stared down at the person below.
The mad titan Thanos sat comfortably on a rock a few feet away, staring down at the mess he created with a guiltless look on his face. His double blade was piercing on the ground beside him, his helmet placed on the top of it.
"What's he been doing?" Tony asked.
"Absolutely nothing," Thor answered, keeping his tone civil even though he felt all the rage bubble up inside him from seeing the titan again.
"Where are the stones?" Steve questioned.
"Somewhere under all this. All I know is he doesn't have 'em," Tony replied.
"So, we keep it that way."
"You know it's a trap, right?" Thor spoke from beside him.
"Yeah. I don't much care."
"Good. Just as long as we're all in agreement," Thor's eyes glowed an electric blue, lightning streaks forming on his arms as he extended them, the axe and his hammer coming to his hands. "Let's kill him properly this time."
The trio advanced slowly, side to side as they approached what would be their greatest nightmare. They weren't prepared for what was coming, but they wouldn't let him get away with it. Not this time.
Thanos watched them with a smirk. "You could not live with your own failure. Where did that bring you? Back to me. I thought by eliminating half of life. . .the other half would thrive. But you've shown me. . .that's impossible."
Tony and Thor walked to move on either side of Thanos as they disappeared through the rubble, and Steve had walk in the center as he intensely glared at the titan in front of him.
"And as long as there are those that remember what was. . .there will always be those that are unable to accept what can be. They will resist."
"Yep, we're all kinds of stubborn," Tony said.
"I'm thankful. Because now. . .I know what I must do," Thanos rose from the rock and grabbed his blade. "I will shred this universe down to its last atom. And then. . .with the stones you've collected for me create a new one. . .teeming with life. . .that knows not what it has lost, but only what it has been given."
Thor held tightly to the hammer and the axe and summoned lightning from them, both weapons glowing with steaks of lightning.
"A grateful universe."
"Born out of blood," Steve muttered.
"They'll never know it. Because you won't be alive to tell them."
All three Avengers charged at the titan, using all their skill set to detain him from the plan he'd be willing to take in action if he held the stones again. Thor summoned all the lightning he could, yelling loudly as he directed the power at the back of Tony's suit, which absorbed all the energy from the streak and fired it at Thanos.
Thanos grunted but used his blade to stop the beams from getting at him, pushing his sword forward to knock Tony off his feet and grab him like a rag doll, not getting a chance to do more before Thor knocked him off with the hammer.
Steve aimed a kick to Thanos's side and let out a grunt of effort before he was thrown back into a rock, colliding harshly in the ground. Thor ran after him, charging at Thanos with fury in his eyes.
He blocked a blow from the sword with his axe before Thanos threw it to the side and grabbed him by the neck, tossing him across the rocks and concrete pieces as Thor began to lose consciousness.
Thanos was ruthless with his blows, and reacted just in time to grab the axe that Thor tried to summon and pressed it against the god's chest, the large blade drawing blood as it began to scar the skin before something knocked him back.
He turned around to see, and his eyes widened in shock when he saw the hammer coming back to the one who had threw it at his direction: Steve Rogers. The man out of time held it close to him with his shield on the other arm, preparing himself for another of the titan's attacks.
"I knew it!" two voices said, but only one could be heard by the soldier.
Steve twisted the hammer in the air and prepared himself for the impact, running up to Thanos to strike him right in the jaw and then throwing his shield into the air, aiming the hammer at the right direction to pull Thanos off his feet.
He raised the hand with the hammer into the air and threw it forward, which directed the streak at Thanos and threw him back. He pulled the trick every time, not loosing rhythm on his blows since he wanted to win the fight, he needed to.
The thought of his head didn't disappear, and he repeated the sentence in his mind with every single blow. For her, he said, because he didn't want to make her sacrifice seem like it was in vain.
