Sakura yawned while stretching, while we sit at the edge of the bridge, watching the workers work. I wanted to help but wasn't sure if I'd just get in the way.

"You two always this lazy?" Tazuna calls over carrying a beam over his shoulder. For an old man, he sure was strong. "Where's that weird blond kit and the one with the attitude." A smile tugs at my lips.

"They're training. Climbing trees."

"Too tough for you two?"

"No, in fact, we're the best. That's why the sensei sent us here to guard you." She holds her hands out and gloats.

"You're joking?"

Sakura gets angry and I put a hand on her shoulder. "Don't worry, we can get him back later."

"You have a plan?" She smiles evilly.

"Still developing." I giggle.

We snap our heads up as Tazuna yells, and we see him arguing with a worker.

"No chance, this is our bridge. Our Island is poor, and it will stay that way until this bridge connects us to the mainland. Commerce, trade, and hope. That's what we're building here."

"There's not gonna be much hope if we're all dead."

"It's already noon. Let's break for lunch." Tazuna walks away.

"Tazuna, let's not end it like this." The worker holds out an arm towards him.

"Save your breath. Oh, and Giichi, don't bother coming back after lunch."

"Um, where are we going?" Sakura asks as we walk the streets of the Land of Waves village.

"You want to eat tonight, don't you? I got to pick up some things for dinner." Tazuna replies, we hear someone call out thief, and see a little boy running away with two fish. "Here we are," Tazuna states as we make it to a market with barely any food in it.

I watch some guy try to reach for Sakura's bag, before I could do anything she tenses and turns around, kicking the man in the head, calling him a pervert. I guess he grazed her butt. Yikes. We left the shop.

"Wow, you really surprised me back there. Girls around here don't fight like that."

"They should. Something's seriously wrong here." She stops and turns around, "Hey, buster!" But it's just a little boy, so she calms down.

"Please?" He smiles, holding out his hands, laughing cutely.

"Uhh, here." he pulls out some candy and gives it to him.

"Oh thank you," he says, before running off.

"This is how it's been since Gatō came here. The children suffer. And the adults are afraid to stand up to him. They've lost all hope. That's why we have to finish the bridge. It will bring commerce and trade. But much more importantly, that bridge is a symbol of courage. We must restore the spirit of our people. When the bridge is finished, people will start to believe again. They'll believe that they can live with dignity. We can't let Gatō stop us."

My hands shake in fists beside me, as I control my breathing. I'm going to do something about this, and that's final. I'm a goddamn chef for fucks sake. I have plenty of food and ingredients and Ryo. I can help feed these people.
