She's dead.

And I feel numb.

I felt more when I thought she was dead. Now that she really is, I feel close to nothing.

No tears. No anger. No sadness.

Which I suppose is good, I barely knew her, I don't deserve to feel anything.

Yet the one thing that I do feel, scares me the most.

The urge for revenge.

But that doesn't matter now. The only thing that does is the soft grass pushing me forward, the night breeze whisping through my hair, and trees whirling past me.

Scott's at my side, we're trailing Boyd or Cora, or both, through the woods. It was a good few minutes before we heard it. A child's scream. That's when I booked it. I didn't even bother looking back at Scott, I know he's right behind me.

I track the kids to an old abandoned metal shed. The shed was ripped out by Boyd. There was a brother and a sister, much like Logan and Maya. I quickly grab their hands, while Boyd was distracted by a jar, and they willingly come with me. I scoop up the girl and when I go for the boy, he's already clinging to Scotts shoulders. We hear Boyd right behind us. We don't spare another second before running at full speed once again.

After what felt like forever of holding the kids, we finally set them down when Scott's phone starts ringing. Scott steps away for a second and I lead the kids under a tree. They're both still shaken up about seeing Boyd in the woods, which I'm sure seemed like a scary monster straight out of their nightmares.

I hand the two kids a bottle of water from my backpack. "What are your names?" I ask sweetly. "Mines Phoebe."

The girl hesitates to answer, she cautiously looks around as if Boyd will pop out of pitch black forest. Her younger brother is the one who steps up, he grabs the water bottle and puts on a brave face.

"My name is Billy," he looks back at his the frightened girl, "and this is my sister Breanne."

"Now what were you guys doing in the middle of the forest, by yourselves, at night?"

"We were just catching fireflies," Breanne states.

"Fireflies?" I think out loud.

"Yeah!" Billy squeaks. "There was a bunch! We were collecting them in jars."

Huh. I've never in the amount of years I've spent in the woods at night, seen an actual firefly glow. Maybe it's connected to the other animals. The pets going missing, the crows, and the deer.

I push the ideas out of my mind. I look up at the tree, I place my palm along it's rough exterior. "Do you want to see something cool?"

They nod, still clearly nervous. But what I'm about to do will make that feeling go away. I hear Scott talking a few yards away.

I close my eyes. I let the power rush through me. Witches are powerful beings but without simple things, like nature, we wouldn't be able to thrive. Magic is in everything, every fiber of everything to ever exist.

A moment later, I open my eyes to see the two siblings in front of me stare at the huge tree in awe. I turn to admire my handy work. The tree is glowing. Through the cracks in the wood, it glows. The leaves on every branch glow. Parts of the grass under us shine from the roots of the tree. Little glowing pieces float up, it lights up the night sky. Tricks like this make me fall in love with magic all over again. Seeing the faces people make when I show them the beautiful art my magic can create is one of my favorite things. I may not have full control, but simple things like this moment, makes me feel like I'm going to be okay.
