Episode Two: If Only | Part Two

Jess walked through the hospital cafeteria with Luke. The two men got coffee for themselves as well as Lorelai and Rory. It had been a gloomy six hours, with no update on Emily's condition other than she was still unconscious but they were running tests as fast as possible. She was stable for the moment.
Richard Gilmore refused to leave her side, leaving Lorelai and Rory comforting each other as most mothers and daughters do in troubling times.

"Mom," Rory said nervously.
"Rory," Lorelai mocked her daughter's serious gaze and gave a soft smile.
"What if something goes wrong? I know she's stable now but... And oh God, I shouldn't even be mentioning this to you I mean this is your mother. I can't be this crude and insensitive, and what about-"
"Rory, stop." Lorelai finally interrupted. "Things are going to work out. Everyone will be fine. Even if they aren't, we will figure a way out to make it fine." She squeezed her daughter against her for a side hug the best she could. Richard Gilmore finally walks out with the doctor.
"What's the news?" Lorelai asked nervously.
"We found an ununsual amount of white blood cells in her bloodstream which could lead to a multitude of things. We only got those results back, we are still waiting for the serious test results to come in. However, the high amount of white blood cells could be the more common tell-tale sign of cancer. We will definitely be as throughall as possible to find out if it is cancer or another disease. We should know in a few more hours. For now, while she's stable, maybe one of you should stay here and the rest can go home." The doctor nodded his condolences and left.
Lorelai choked back tears that had been briming in her eyes. She hugged Rory and sobbed while Richard had a blank empty expression on his face. Rory was at a loss for words. Luke and Jess finally arrived with the coffee, but they could see that this was the time to not say a word and just be there.
"Lorelai, go home. It's been a late night, you and Rory need rest." Richard said.
"But," Lorelai protested.
"No buts. Lorelai, go. The news will be the same when you come back tomorrow. I will call you if your mother's condition changes."
Lorelai nodded and hugged her father then went home to a silent house with silent tears.
