Tyler could do nothing but lay Alyssa' once lively body on a pile of blankets and fall on his bed. The leader in him thought about repairing the doors, but at that moment he decided it was someone else's turn to pitch in. After what seemed like days had passed he drifted into a fitful sleep.
"The one man that returned was covered in scratches and bites, all leaking puss and blood. He explained that there was one threat they had forgot to account for. Evolution.
"In the absence of humanity the already polar animal and plant species flourished. The once few bears of snow once again ruled the lands. Giant wolves with cloaks of shadows attacked anything that moved. These wolves were not as humans had left them. Over the years, they had developed a reptilian hunting tactic. The wolves evolved saliva not unlike the now extinct Komodo Dragons and other monitor lizards.
"Most of the survivors agreed that when they returned to the surface the first order of business was to drive away the wolves, but there was the minority that thought the beasts could be befriended. Those who wished to ally with the wolves created their own bunkers while those who sought to kill them gathered in walled cities and tried to rebuild what once was.
"Then came the day when it was shown who was right."
