Tyler whipped around to see his soon-to-be bond on the dirt in a pool of crimson blood. Sally grabbed Dan and dragged him with her to gather first aid and tend Prudence's wounds. Tyler rushed to Prudence's side with Georgia following behind.
When he reached Prudence, he saw she'd been hit on her thigh. Tyler immediately started analysis.
"Georgia, what kind of weapon is this from?"
She inspected the bullet hole and found the round a few feet away.
"Pretty heavy duty. It went clean through her leg. I'd say a long range sniper rifle if I were to guess." Georgia had a sort of mixture of respect at such a clean shot and anger that Prudence had been injured.
Just then Dan and Sally came sprinting back with arms full of gauze, bandages, and anti-bacterial meds. Sally immediately got to work, ordering Georgia and Tyler lift Prudence and lay her on a thick blanket to temporarily serve as a bed. Everyone was told to leave once Sally started to inspect the wound.
"Please Sally, let me stay," Tyler desperately pleaded, and Sally, to sweet to deny his request allowed it. As she nursed Prudence back to health, with Tyler worriedly watching, a girl in the mountain above smiled. With her sandy hair blowing in the winter wind, she packed up her rifle and tripod, and slowly walked away.
The next day Tyler woke up to an uninvited alarm.
"Up! NOW!!!" Georgia yelled, shaking him vigorously and jumping with excitement, "Prudence is awake! Sally fixed her up and she's ready to go!"
Tyler jolted upright and immediately hightailed it down to the medical tent. He burst in to see all his friends and John surrounding Prudence, but they all immediately parted to let him through.
"Prudence, you're ok!" He exclaimed joyfully, running to stroke her fur, "I think I'm ready to bond now."
"As am I," she replied, "you have shown me that there are some things you shouldn't wait for."
John stayed behind to conduct the ceremony, while everyone else went to organize the Brutes to search for whomever had injured Prudence.
Tyler and Prudence took their oaths without hesitation and each went their separate ways to a well deserved rest.
That night, after everyone was asleep, the girl with sandy hair made her way down the mountain, and by sunrise, she found a new friend.
