Sarah's POV
The ticking of the clock was getting on her nerves, but she had to sit still and finish her bible study for the day.
Heaving a sigh she closed the bible and decided to meditate on the words she'd just read. She had no where to go so it really wasn't a choice of her being busy.
Chores were done hours ago, meals had been prepared and distributed at the church, the children's lessons were done with. Craig was somewhere with father, training for his position as the new minister.
At sixteen, they both had matured nicely. Even though they were twins, they were stark different individuals. Both had inherited their mother's hair, Sarah taking their mother's eyes and Craig their father's.
Speaking of mother, the woman was seated with her in the library but on the other side. She never liked being disturbed during her bible study.
Seeing as she had distracted herself enough, she stood up and kept the bible back on the table. She'd repeat those scriptures later in the evening, at her special spot.
The spot her father had begged her to be careful of. Her brother had asked her nicely to not get herself killed, especially now that there was an unrest.
The mafia heir had ascended the throne before the said time. Unrest as a result of the people being forcefully recruited to join them.
Just the men though, but that could easily change anytime.
'I'm going to the church mother', she said as she approached her mother.
'Take Shalom with you',
'Yes mother',
Shalom was seated in the living room playing with her dolls. The boys were absent, yelling outside told her where she'd find them.
'Hi baby, why aren't you with the boys?',
'Samuel said he'd cut off Missy's arm if I didn't leave them to play ball alone', she said not looking up. Her younger brothers were bullies. Both Samuel and Jeremiah. They took pleasure in tormenting Shalom the baby of the house.
'Is that right? Well I suppose there'll be no cookies for them tonight. Come along darling, we'll bake at the church kitchen',
'Yay!', the six year old stood up with her favorite doll Missy and they both used the back door to get to the kitchen.
'Hi Duncan!',
The man groaned. Sarah never missed a beat to tease him.
'Hello Sarah, hello Shalom', he continued sorting out the veggies he came to deliver.
'Can I have a carrot?', Shalom asked.
'Of course dear, let me set these up first okay?',
She nodded, Sarah had gone to bring out the bowls needed to make the cookies.
'And the cabbage too, and the -', she zoned out for a minute and found Shalom having a serious conversation with Duncan.
'That all? Do you need me to move any of the fruits?'
'No that's fine. Thank you!', she said as an after thought
'Of course, never forget to always say?',
'Thank you whenever someone gives you something or does something for you', Shalom responded.
'Good girl, and since Sarah has no bullets for me today I'll take my leave in one piece',
'Its the word working Duncan, I'll have my swords sharpened next time',
'Yea, bye!", He left them to continue what they were about.
'Okay little helper. You're going to sit here and help me add these to the bowl. Wait for me before you start okay?',
'Okay!',
The kitchen was where she bonded with her father most. He enjoyed cooking, something mother did out of necessity.
Father on the other hand loved it, Craig wouldn't be caught dead in the kitchen. Except to take food. But mom assures everyone he knows his way around it.
Highly doubtful, but she had to get back before Shalom grew bored.
'Okay darling. Let's start with that, pour it gently. Good, the next one. Be careful with the eggs baby, don't spill it. Then the milk, okay', soon she was kneading the dough and Shalom helped cut the shapes of the cookies.
When they were done, they cleaned up the kitchen. Packed up the cookies they were taking home and set the rest in the cookie jars in the pantry.
'I want a cookie!',
'Me too',
'But Shalom couldn't play ball with you, why should she give you her cookies?', not missing a step she entered the house and took the cookies to her room where she knew nobody would touch it. Coming back down she heard the boys begging Shalom.
'You can play with us tomorrow'
'And I won't hurt Missy, promise',
Children were the most entertaining bunch she could ever find.
'Go clean up for dinner boys, Father and Craig would soon be home. You too Missy',Shalom giggled as she was lifted to go clean up for the day.
Settling the kids mother made an appearance. They could have been mistaken for sisters but her eyes showed things that Sarah could only dream about. Knowledge, something that she too would get as they years went by.
'Good evening mother', Sarah greeted first then her siblings followed suit. Each got a hug and a kiss in response before she went to the kitchen to see what was going to be dinner.
'Father and Craig are not yet here mother',
'Okay, but the young ones would soon start a riot. Give them their dinner, if you want to join them you can join them',
Father and Craig come in from the door that exact moment.
'Good evening father',
'Good evening mother', they greeted their parents. Father smiled at Sarah, mother gave Craig a hug before going to greet her husband properly.
'Dinner ready yet?',
'Yes', Sarah said.
'Bring ours to my study, the rest of you eat, pray and go to bed at the appropriate time',
'Okay father', she did as she was instructed. Leaving Craig to handle their siblings while she took her parents' meal to them.
