'Donna? Donna please wake up ma'am -', the voice drew her out of her sleep.
She was drained, everything hurt.
'Mae? What is it?', even those words had her breathing heavily.
She shakily touched her brow to find that she was feverish. Again.
With the way she was going one would think something more was going on with her other than the beating she received.
'Oh Donna, I didn't know how to say no to the Don. He's asked for you to be at breakfast this morning. And we have just thirty minutes to be there-',
'What?', he wanted her to come to him? Did he suddenly forget she wasn't in shape for that? Then she remembered what happened the previous day.
Guess it was time for her punishment.
She signaled the maid to help her up. She cleaned up as much as she could, and went to see him.
With the maid supporting her all the way to the door. The maid couldn't go in so she had to manage all by herself till she got to the table were Luigi was seated, perusing the morning papers.
'Don', she greeted. Tried to bow and instantly regretted it.
'Sit amore', she gratefully sank into the chair. Sweat was gathering at her brows. She tried to keep her breathing even, and ignore the sticky feeling at her side.
She was sure she'd ripped something if the pain she was feeling was anything to go by.
'Eat', that one command she just knew she couldn't obey. She was feeling faint, but Luigi who was staring at her didn't look like he'd show any form of mercy.
She forced her hand up and reached for the bread. Good thing he always had bread served to him. But that was all she could do.
'Amore, you know I don't like repeating myself ', his voice was soft, loving even. But his eyes showed his full intent. The amusement was back, the cynical sort that dominated his eyes in the first months of being here.
'I can't ', she was breathing heavily as pain overcame her senses.
'Sure you can, you seemed to have enough energy yesterday. Certainly there's enough for this simple task. Eat!', he said firmly.
She forced her hand to her mouth and took a bit of the bread before letting her hand fall and the bread along with it.
'Tsk tsk, now you insult me by throwing the food I offered you from my table away. Is this really how you want us to be amore?', he shook his head for effect.
'Please, stop', she begged in a shaky voice.
'You see there's that word again coming from your mouth to me. What gave you the impression that you could say those words to me? And more importantly why do you think I should listen to you?', the amusement was gone.
A blank slate took over it.
'You shouldn't hurt fratello, he saved me-',
'His incompetence is the reason you're like this!', he cut her off.
She was fighting to keep her eyes open.
'Careful darling, I fancy you but not that much. If you interfere in my affairs ever again, it'd be the last thing you do', he suddenly whispered in to her ears and left her there.
She forced herself to lower to the ground, she felt lying down would do her much good than sitting.
Those were her last thoughts.
Mrs Russo paced the corridor when she heard that Luigi had summoned Sarah that morning.
It wouldn't end well, she just had the sinking feeling that something was very wrong.
Her fears were confirmed when she saw Luigi walking out of the office without Sarah.
'Il mio orgoglio, where is she?', he didn't answer and kept walking.
'Please!', he didn't stop.
She immediately turned around and ran into the office where she watched Sarah's body hit the ground.
She screamed.
The guards, the maids, everyone who heard her rushed to her. Somebody helped lift Sarah off the floor and someone ran for the doctor.
Why was she bleeding?!! She kept asking herself as the men were immediately excused from the room and they mad a quick work of undressing her and cleaning up the blood.
'Ma'am, her stitches ', a maid pointed out. Mrs Russo immediately got to work but the doctor came in right after and took over.
When he was done he turned to Mrs Russo.
'Donna, I don't know what else to do. She should be healing just fine. This fever is quite rare, I've considered if she was perhaps hit with something that contains a poison but there are no telling signs-',
'There are always telling signs Doctor, we just have to find it. Oh dear God please, help us to save her',
'Yes, she should reduce any movements for now. I've given her a tonic for the fever, it's right here. Then I've redone her stitches. I'd go give the Don my reports then', he gave her the drug and turned to leave.
'Doc? Please check on Hosea before you leave. He's refused my help as usual ',
'Of course Donna ',
After the doctor gave his report to Luigi, he left with instructions to begin treatments with an antidote.
Someone wanted his Donna dead, and that someone would pay with his life and the life of all who know his name.
Hosea had been spares because of Sarah. Now it was Donovan's turn.
But first things first, his Mama was going to go for confinement.
No matter how hard she tried, she was one of the reasons his father still lived. Another being Sarah.
With Sarah confined by sickness, and his mother confined by him. He really wondered who was going to save Donovan from him this time.
He knocked back his drink and walked to his Mama's room.
Sarah looked deathly pale. His mama was busy cleaning her up and muttering prayers no doubt.
Well, maybe her God would heal her. But in the meantime she was were he needed her to be.
'Mama your confinement begins at once. You'd not step out of this room until I say otherwise. And if you per chance involve Sarah in this matter, you'd like me even less. Take care of her in the meantime',
He turned around and left to go deal with Donovan once and for all.
