The time it took to get to the doctor's house as that was one of the very few days he wasn't on the compound and to bring him, Mrs Russo had undressed and cleaned most of the injuries and bruises Sarah sustained with the help of maids.
She had to switch her mind off and focus on the task at hand. She didn't want to dwell on the why's, who did what and others at the moment.
Whoever did this made a very calculative move.
One, the person knee when the Don was out on crucial business, such that he couldn't leave without losing credibility as a true Don
Two, attack what he held closest to his heart, which as far as she was concerned was kill what he held closest to his heart
Three, it might have been pure coincidence but she doubted it, hurt what he held closest on one of the few nights that the Doctor wasn't on ground because the Don wasn't on ground as well.
As soon as she'd bathed and cleaned all the wounds, the door banged open by Hosea who had the doctor right behind him.
'Thank God you're here. All wounds have been cleaned but she got a good beating. I couldn't tell if anything was broken-',
'I'd take over from here Donna. You did good, thank you', all she could do was nod. Cause she felt her eyes fill with tears suddenly.
She was a mother after all, one that loved her children fiercely.
And seeing Sarah, her adopted daughter like this was causing her pain.
Why didn't they go after her?
Why did it have to be the sweet girl that everyone was warming up to?
She nodded again, took a shaky breathe and allowed Hosea lead her to a seat where she buried her face in her hands trying to calm herself.
After careful examination the doctor gave his verdict.
'Her ribs are cracked, three on both sides. The discoloration you saw on her back was due to internal bleeding. I've been able to remove the blood and it seems like it won't continue. The worst of the injuries are the bruises, but as we all know those hurt for a much longer time.
She should wake up by morning. I had her drink laudanum to ensure she slept through most of it. But she'd be in a lot of pain.
I didn't see anything around her mouth area but we'll know more when she can voice where hurts the most.
I'm so sorry Donna', he said when he was done. Even he knew the gravity of the situation.
If Luigi came home before he was meant to, Sarah would automatically be targeted by all the famiglia. Especially allies.
Weakness were never allowed. A distraction yes, but a weakness never.
She set to the task of writing Luigi about the recent happenings.
She'd have preferred not to, but she was well aware that word would get to him sooner than later. It was better for everyone if he got the news immediately and from family, rather than from rumors that'll run him crazy.
Hosea picked up his quill and did his duty as Consigliere. Luigi couldn't come home, not now. He needed to behave rationally for the famiglia, for Sarah's safety.
Fratello, I'm sure you've read Mama's letter before mine as you should. But stay right where you are and think.
Sarah is in danger, no doubt about it. But if you come at once she'd be made a moving target.
You know where we're from and what we're a part of. And you are currently the highest on the seat of power.
You have too many people as loyals, they would be the ones to come after her. Not your enemies
Stay put, let me watch over soreilla.
I know I've failed from the onset. But allow me to pay with my life if something else happens before you get back.
She's currently sleeping. I'm sure Mama listed the injuries. But have no fear, it's my life for hers.
This I promise.
Luigi crumbled the letter while staring into the fire place.
He should stay put?
Of all the things they could ask of him, it was for him to stay put. For him to do nothing while Sarah suffered.
If he did anything, these men who clapped him on the back in greetings would put her six feet under.
No weaknesses allowed.
One of the Don's had killed his son's wife because she became his obsession. Given that she overstepped her boundaries and tried to run their famiglia, not in the subtle way of mama.
A bullet to her head by his father was his wake up call.
The bastardo committed suicide shortly, but not without killing his father first.
He knew why the rules were there, but now that he was in the position he was very okay with breaking it.
He should do nothing...
He immediately threw his whiskey glass and in no time the room was in shambles.
He should do nothing?!!!
Who the h*** did they think they were?
His life for hers....
Oh Hosea was going to know pain when he got his hands on him. Real pain. And he'd kill that father of his once and for all.
He'd long outlived his usefulness.
Currently a waste of space. He did this no questions asked, he could already picture his smug face. Hear his snide comments, and cynical laugh.
He'd pay.
Third time was the charm. He'd pay, and apologize to his mama for killing the scumbag she was married to.
Or not.
She too should have known that his days were numbered.
He shoved some things aside and penned down instructions. Nobody was going to escape this.
Not Hosea
Not the doctor
Not the guards
And definitely not his father.
They better prepare for a blood bath on his return.
He was required to do nothing while here. But once he was home, there'll be a lot to pay for.
