"And then he completely ignored me! He just continued going about his merry way like it was nothing! I don't understand why he felt the need to do something like that." I placed my hands on my hips angrily as I told Natalie about the rude man I encountered earlier.
The both of us were on our way to our dorms after a long day of class. I had so much homework to do, and exams to study for. At least there weren't any major projects like last semester.
"I told you that we shouldn't only reach out to staff, Riles." Natalie brushed a large strand of hair behind her ear and shrugged. "The faculty don't want to be involved with the students... I don't blame them. They just want to do their work, get paid, and leave. Some of these other students are wild and annoying."
"But I approached him politely." I hissed. "What he did was completely uncalled for. If he wanted to be left alone, he could've said 'no thanks' instead of defiling our paper full of signatures. I've had to scratch it out after what he did! Now it looks ugly because there's an ugly blob of scribble!"
"Only you would worry about that." Natalie rolled her eyes and laughed. "Did you take extra notes in Mr. Brown's class? I'm sorry I couldn't make it."
"Yeah, I took some down for you. It's in my bag—" I opened my backpack but found that my notebook wasn't there. My mind racked for any idea of where I put it. I sloshed some items around, searching intently. Nope, it wasn't in there. "I probably left it in class, let me go back to get it."
"You don't have to! We already walked all this way!"
"No, I need it for my homework tonight. I'll be right back." I waved at her and jogged back towards one of our school buildings. I rushed back into the class, earning a few weird glances from my peers who had just seen me leave. It didn't matter, I had to find my notebook.
I searched for about 10 minutes, but I still couldn't find it. I was sure I left it there unless someone took it. I couldn't ask anyone, everyone in the class already left.
But why would anyone take my notebook? Never mind, someone probably wanted to copy my answers and make a cheat sheet. "Ugh, this is so frustrating!" I stomped my foot and placed my hand on my forehead.
I heard the sound of a trash bin being rolled into the classroom and turned to see the same rude guy I met. He ignored my presence and started cleaning up, picking up various trash around the room.
Then he lifted the trash can by the professor's desk, and I saw my notebook hanging out of it. Someone must've thrown it away. I snatched the can out of his hands. "Sorry, this notebook is mine!"
The guy just blinked at me in annoyance and snatched the can back. "Would you stop interfering with my work?" He spat and tossed the bag full of trash and with my notebook inside of it in the larger bin.
"My notebook is in there!" I groaned.
He rolled his eyes and stuck his hand in the bin before yanking out my notebook and tossing at it me. I caught it, but then immediately dropped it after realizing all the germs that probably spread all over it from being in the bin.
I needed some bleach spray, and I needed it now.
Before I could say anything else, he strolled out of the room, leaving me in disgust. I chased after him, deciding that it was the right time to confront him about his attitude. I hopped in front of him and crossed my arms. "I don't know what your problem is, but you shouldn't treat students rudely, especially if you want to keep your job."
"What? Are you threatening me?"
"I'm just saying that your behavior could get you fired."
"How?" He snapped. "YOU'RE the one in my way. I'm just trying to pick up and leave but you keep interrupting by throwing yourself in the way of where I have to be."
"Don't think I forgot about how you defiled my petition sheet with your little joke earlier. I'm sure that can be counted as harassing a student—"
"You're completely off the wall. I don't have time for this—" He shrugged and shoved past me angrily. Before I could reach out and say anything else, the building began to shake violently.
"What the—" I heard the guy shout and stop dead in his track.
"Earthquake!" I shrieked and crouched down and over to the wall. The lights in the hallway started flickering rapidly, the one above me started to loosen. So did the ceiling panels. White crumbs from the ceiling began falling as if it were snowfall.
The rude custodian ran back over to me and grabbed my arm, before pulling me back over to the classroom. "What are you—!"
"We have to stay under a doorway!" He snapped. "Unless you want to be crushed by fallen debris?"
Maybe it was better to follow him than to wait out in the open. If we survived, we could finish this argument later. I nodded and made my way over to the door, just in time. The ceiling from the hallway began crashing down onto the floor, including several lights.
Then, a loud crash came from inside the classroom. From my peripheral, it looked like a large boulder came smashing through the building. Whatever it was, threw me and the custodian to the ground, and the building around us collapsed.
I couldn't do anything because my body felt limp and my vision began to blur.

[James - Third Person]
He felt heavy as he tried sitting up to regain composure. He had an intense headache from being thrown aside because of the impact. He examined his body and tore off some of the rubble that had fallen into him which revealed that his work clothes were scratched up and ripped all over.
"Shite." He groaned and pressed his hand to his head. Then he remembered the woman who was there with him. Where was she? He glanced around and saw a leg sticking out from under a pile of rocks and books. He rushed over to her and pulled everything off of her.
"Are you okay?" He shook the woman, but she didn't move. She was completely unconscious. He panicked for a second after a thought about her being dead crossed his mind. He pressed his ear against her chest awkwardly and sighed in relief when he still heard her heart beating.
She was definitely still alive. When he pulled away from her, a jolt of a voltage spike worked around his hands and forearms, and he hopped back. "What in the world?" He looked at his hands intently. He wasn't going crazy, was he? It was obviously some sort of lightning that he saw entwine with his arms.
It didn't hurt him though. He rolled his wrists and snapped his fingers, and another voltage spike came shooting out of his hands, almost hitting the unconscious lady beside him. He looked at his hands and then to the air, so many thoughts now running through his mind.
What exactly was it that crashed into the building? What caused the earthquake? He searched around the destroyed class for an answer and noticed a huge and strange-looking rock was in the middle of the room. The sound of a crack made his heart beat faster.
He couldn't see what was happening, but from where he was, he saw smoke, and then a part of the rock bursting open. A very odd-looking creature came out of it. The creature was covered in goo, and spikes were all over its body. He didn't know what it was, but it didn't look friendly at all.
He ducked over the woman's body as it blubbered out something incoherent and sloshed its way towards them. He held his breath, hoping that it wouldn't see them. Then it looked around the room as if scanning to see if people were there, before leaving through the gaping hole in the wall.
He sighed and relaxed once he saw that the creature left.
"What are you doing?" He heard the woman's voice from below him groan. The two were in an awkward position. He swore in his head.
