It seemed that the earthquake didn't only affect our university, but it also caused damage to the homes and stores surrounding it. And it was horrific to see all the people in the same state as the students. They were all staring down and standing in several formed lines, which probably meant it was only a matter of time before they transformed.

My mind tried to find any logical explanation for all of this. What exactly happened during that earthquake? What were those creatures? Was it like this all over the state?

I squeaked when James took a sharp turn and sped through the neighborhood, trying to get away as fast as he could from the people who were all entranced in a weird state. The more people we saw gazing down as we drove by, the heavier he pressed his foot on the gas.

Eventually, we were on a highway and speeding away from the wasteland. The roads were much more clean going forward. It seemed like it didn't affect the rest of the state.

If that were the case, we had to warn people. After about 45 minutes of driving down the interstate, we left the exit and stopped at a nearby gas station. The people nearby seemed to be active and moving about casually, unlike what we saw earlier.

James pulled over next to the gas pump and got out of the car, running his hands through his short black hair. I hopped out after him and looked around to make sure we were completely safe.

"We have to go to the Police, and let them know about what happened. Those things could come here any minute, you saw how fast those things were."

"How do you think we should explain it to them?" He scoffed. I frowned at him. I didn't appreciate his sarcastic tone.

"We tell them exactly how we saw it!"

"Stupid." He shook his head.

"I'm not stupid! I'm one of the top students at that University, mind you."

"Really? Then I guess you can be the one to tell them that we were attacked by monsters and that your friends transformed. Also, let them know about this," He gestured with his hands, and voltage danced across his fingers. "Do you really think they'd believe you? They're going to lock you up in a psych ward for sure."

"You have proof!" I grabbed his arm and pointed at his hand. "This is proof!"

"Let go." He snatched his arm away. "I suggest we hightail our behinds outta here before they come after this town next. I'm not risking my life."

"You can't just leave all these people!"

"I'm not." He smirked and popped the gas cap before pumping the gas into the car. "I'm going to warn my family and get the heck out of here."

"And what about me!?" I whined.

"And what about you?" He pressed his lips together. "Do you realize how annoying you are? You're bossy, rude, and you look down on people."

"You're not any better!" I groaned.

"Whatever, Princess." He shrugged and pulled the pump out of the tank and closed the gas cap. "I'm leaving."

"You're leaving me here?"

"You're on your own. I saved you back at that school, I can't afford to risk my own or my family's life for you." He hopped back into the driver's seat. I reached for the back door but he locked it.

"I can't believe you! You jerk!"

He started the car and drove off before I could say anything else. The other customers at the gas station looked at me awkwardly before going back to mind their business. I probably looked like someone's crazy ex-girlfriend right now. I stomped away, ashamed.
