I felt my head get shoved aside harshly, and it woke me up. I opened my eyes only to see James glaring at me as if I had just done something completely revolting. I pressed my hand against my neck and yawned. "Did you push my head?"
"You slobber in your sleep, and you kept leaning on me." He pushed himself up and off the ground. Last night, he told me to take the bed and he'd sleep on the floor. It was the first gentlemanly thing I've seen him do. I wasn't sure what he meant by saying that I was leaning on him.
"I don't slobber!" I huffed. "And I never even touched you!"
"You sleep like a wild animal." He rolled his eyes and stretched his arms. "Do you know how many times you rolled off the bed? No, you don't. I was the one who carried you back onto it. Then you kept throwing your legs off and nearly kicked me in the face multiple times. So annoying." He groaned.
"Oh yeah? Well, you snore! Very loudly too! I remember having to get up and roll you over just so the sound would be facing the opposite way!"
"I don't snore," James stated nonchalantly.
"Yes, you do!"
"Just get up and grab your things. We have to get ready to leave." He glanced at his alarm clock on the desk and grabbed the bag he brought from The car. Then he walked out of the bedroom.
I grabbed one of the blankets off his bed and folded it. I didn't know where we were headed, but I knew we may need this later. Who knows if we had to sleep somewhere cold?
I walked to the door and saw myself in the mirror on the desk briefly. Lord, I looked an absolute mess. I definitely needed a shower. My medium-length curly hair was all over the place. I brushed parts of it down with my hands, but let's be honest, we all knew I needed water to tame this thing.
"Riley!" I heard James shout. He was rushing me. I quickly left the bedroom and walked over to the exit. James held the door open with his eyes narrowed at me as I sauntered through. "You act like we aren't being chased by bloodthirsty aliens. Speed up!"
He locked the restaurant door behind us and jogged over to the car. I was horrified by our surroundings. Dead bodies were lying in the street. Those poor people probably couldn't find shelter in time. I didn't even hear screaming last night.
"Riley! You coming or what?"
"I am!" I whined. "I'm just.. feeling guilty. I tried warning them and they wouldn't listen."
"I already told you going to the police wouldn't help. Don't feel bad for them. If I didn't see for myself, I wouldn't have believed you either." He opened the back door to his car and threw his bag inside.
"How could you say that!" I frowned at him. This guy really lacked empathy. How could he be so ill-mannered to the people here? He was telling me to ignore the fact that those things just slaughtered a bunch of people. "They have families, just like we do! All you care about is yourself!"
"You're absolutely right." James smiled at me. "Call me selfish, I don't care. What I do care about is my own health and the well-being of my family. I've been that way ever since I came here. You Americans are the same way! You guys think you all matter more than everyone else."
"That's not true!"
"Oh really?" He took a step towards me. "Be honest, if I didn't book flight tickets and helped my parents get out of here, which one of you Americans would've taken the time to help my disabled mother to flee? She's bound to a wheelchair. Which one of you would push her to safety after seeing those things?"
"I agree that a lot of people would've probably run off out of fear, but that's a valid reason for running! Everyone has fight or flight reactions, and here it's more common to seek shelter. We want to survive to take care of our families too! But not every American is like that—"
