Fern ran like never before. She had woken up around sundown, meaning no telling how long until there wasn't enough light to see. She ran until her feet hurt. Fern stopped to catch her breath. She didn't know where she was, or where she was going, but she hoped she would see something familiar soon. She was just about to start running again when she noticed something. As quickly as she saw it, it was gone. It looked like a green astronaut suit  Was it her imagination? She wanted to see if she could find out who it was but hesitated. She had to get to Sara before it got too dark. She continued into an ally and jumped a fence. Fern recognized the giant gray building that was the back of the library! She knew exactly where she was, and the storm shelter is right next to the library. Slowing down, she began tip towing towards where the storm shelter was. It looked like a half-cylinder shape, and it was all white and metallic. It looked kinda neat. Fern began slowly walking towards it when she saw someone standing outside. She hid behind the wall that surrounded the parking lot to the library. She had to find some way to get him away. She began digging into the snow. Once she made it to the concrete, she began searching for rocks or concrete chunks to throw. She found a good-sized one, about the size of an apple, and picked it up. She slowly began walking over to the shelter, her heart pounding. She slowly made her way towards the front. She peaked out to see the person standing guard. He was tall and didn't look like any of the other people she has seen. A big white metal box sat beside him. Fern almost didn't notice the small pistol sitting on top of it. She took a deep breath. Let's do this. She jumped out, and as hard as possible threw the rock towards the man. It made a loud noise as she heard it collide with his head. Fern snatched up the pistol. "Stand there on the ground!" She shouted. Fern pulled the firing pin back. She never shot a gun in her life, but I mean, how hard can it be?  The guy was laying in the snow, shouting in pain.  I don't think I need to worry about him right now. Fern turned around and ran towards the door. It had a big sliver knob on it, so she twisted it. The door squealed as it opened. Sara was laying on the floor, asleep. "Sara!" Fern shouted as she ran over to her.

"Fern!" Sara said almost right after fern had said her name. Then, she went to a whisper.

"What are you doing here? Those people are insane!"

"Your welcome," Fern said as she helped Sara up. They both ran outside where it was a little brighter.

"We have to hurry. They're supposed to be back any-"

"Any second now." A woman said. Fern and Sara both turned to look at the girl who spoke. Fern recognized her as the one who had tried to shoot her. There was another guy too. He was holding another gun. How many guns do these people have!? She thought to herself.

"I don't think I properly introduced myself yet. I'm Zack, That's Isabel, and the guy you knocked out is Peter." He said as if he was a villain or something. "But please, call us the thieves. Now, I believe you still haven't answered my question."

"I don't know where everyone is!"

"How would you feel if-" Zack pointed to gun towards Sara.

Something clicked inside Fern suddenly. Like realizing a nightmare is just a dream, and you're no longer scared. Fern aimed the pistol she was holding at Zack and pulled the trigger.
