The explosion sent Fern crashing into the cliffside wall, knocking the breath out of her. She balled up on the ground to shield herself from the dirt and rocks that were sent flying, pain pulsed in her back. Fern's ears rang as she closed her eyes tighter, dirt pouring onto her face. An eternity seemed to go by. Fern forced herself to open her eyes. Dust and smoke filled the air, and the Helicopter was definitely unflyable. Sara! Fern tried to stand up, but the pain in her back hurt too much. The world seemed to get darker and darker.
"You okay?" Fern could hear Sam's voice.
"M-my back.." Fern struggled to spit the words out.
"Alright, don't move."
"Everyone okay?" Marcus asked.
"It's Fern, her back hurts," Sam said.
"Are you trying to get yourself killed!?" Sara hugged her.
"It just happens I guess. I'll be fine." Fern managed to say.
"We need to get her out of the open. Looks like it might rain."
"Dont move her. she'll be fine." Marcus told Sam.
"Fern, you're gonna be okay." Sara gave Fern's hand a squeeze, as Fern's eyes closed and she fell asleep.
"Fern," Sara whispered as she moved dust from Fern's face. Sara put her head up against Fern's chest, checking her heart. It was night, and there was a fire built next to them. "Hey." Fern croaked.
"Oh, you're awake. I was worried when you went to sleep- that you wouldn't wake up" Sara Whispered.
"S-Sara?"
"It's okay," Sara replied. "Marcus called for help. They should get here soon." Fern's head hurt, like everything else. That's when Sara did something Fern didn't expect. She leaned in and kissed her. On the lips, not one of those cheek kisses close friends do, but the kind that means more than that. Sara pulled away as Marcus and Sam's voices could be heard in the distance getting closer. "About time that happened." Fern smiled as the world slowly got darker.
"I love you."
