"And that's why we can't swim there anymore." Fern finished the story she was telling Sam. Sara had fallen asleep on the couch, so Fern and Sam were chatting. This was the first time she and Sam really had a chance to talk. His hair looked slightly different than when Fern first saw him. His once smooth black hair now hung down, almost covering his eyes. His hair now parted down the middle. "I notice your hair is different than when I first saw you."
"Yeah, I found a brush in the bathroom over there," Sam said, pointing to the door on the other side of the room. "Figured since I don't have any gel or anything, I might as well do SOMETHING with my hair."
"I like it," Fern told him.
"Thanks." Sam grinned back.
"Are you a cat person or a dog person?" She asked.
"I like them both. But I'm more of a dog guy." He answered.
"I like cats."
"I had a cat once," Sam told her.
"What happened to it?" Fern asked.
"He ran away. I guess he wanted a girlfriend. Or a boyfriend if that's his thing." Sam added. "It's okay though. He's happy wherever he is." Sam told her. "His name was Dusty." He continued. "Crazy cat was obsessed with the air conditioner in my mom's room."
"Did it have anything in it to make it smell different?" Fern asked.
"No. I think he enjoyed the cool air. Drove mom crazy."
They laughed. "Sara is absolutely obsessed with animals," Fern said. She looked over at where Sara was sleeping. The couch was empty.
"Where did Sara go?" Fern asked.
"She was just sleeping over there, wasn't she?" Sam replied.
"I thought she was. Sara?" Fern shouted Sara's name, hoping she was just in the cabin somewhere. No one responded. Fern began to worry.
"Maybe she stepped outside for some reason?"
"But that would make no sense!" Fern reasoned.
"Neither does a whole township vanishing into thin air but here we are." Sam pointed out. "Anyways, we could at least call outside, and see if she's out there? couldn't hurt."
"I guess your right." Fern sighed. They walked over to the front door, and outside. They called Sara's name a few times. That was when Fern saw them.
Footprints. Small, Sara-sized footprints.
