The gunshot played in Fern's head. The gunshot echoed in her mind. All around was an empty void, surrounded by the sounds of the last few seconds before she was shot. "She's losing us!" Sara's voice echoed as well. Then, there was the mumbling. two voices. As they became more real sounded, Fern recognized one of the voices as Saras. Light flooded Fern's eyes. She was in the cabin. Fern sat up. "Hello. Sara?" Fern pushed the words out of her mouth, still confused about how she ended up back at the cabin. It was all just a dream, Fern thought to herself. She didn't get shot, she didn't shoot someone, and her parents would be waiting, back in the town. Her theory was proven wrong in an instant as her chest began to burn from the gunshot wound. "She's awake!" Sara shouted. She sounded as if she had been crying. "Oh my gosh! How are you feeling?"

"Pain. A lot of pain." Fern murmured.

"Fern, this is Sam. He helped save your life." Only now Fern noticed him. He was tall and had blonde-brown short hair.

"Thank you for saving me!" Fern replied.

"I wouldn't call it that. I didn't even know what I was doing the whole time."

"Well, thanks anyway." Fern attempted to get up from the couch she was sitting on. "Don't get up!" Sam told her.

"I'm fine." As if on cue, her shoulder pulsed with pain. "Nevermind, I'm not."

"It's okay. Your awake, which is good, I think." Sam told her.

"If you say so." Fern replied as her eyes began to close, and she fell back to sleep.

"How are you feeling?" Sam asked as Fern awoke from sleep. "Fine, I guess. It's just sore."

"Best if you don't move so much," Sam told her.

"Sam? I have a question." Fern said.

"What."

"Where did everyone go?" She asked him. Surely, he might know something. Right?

"I don't know."

"So, did they just disappear?"

"I don't know. I wasn't here at the time. I was spending the week at an abandoned house with some guys I met at school. We were looking for spirits or ghosts and stuff. We went home early because of all the snow."

"Where are they now?" Fern asked.

"I abandoned them. They decided to steal some money they found in a cash register since 'no ones looking'". Sam explained. Fern realized that he must have been talking about those other guys. The ones the shot her. Fern looked around the cabin. "Where's Sara?" She asked.

"Heating up some canned food she found or something," Sam replied.

"Oh, okay," Fern said, slowly feeling her eyes close shut as she fell back asleep.
