A few hours had passed, and Sara had fallen asleep on the couch. The storm had calmed down a little, and it seemed they might be able to get home.
"Sara. Sara, get up." Fern said softly.
"What time is it?" Sara groaned as she got up.
"Almost one o'clock," Fern said. "The snow has calmed down some. This is our chance to get back home." Fern began putting everything back the way it was when they came in. she put the blankets back in the back, and put the pillows back on the couch. By the time she was finished with it all, Sara was fully awake.
"You think our parents called the police or anything? Ya know, we've been gone all day."
"I'm sure they've reported us as missing or something," Fern responded.
"In that case, we better hurry up and get going." Sara began putting on her jacket. Finally, they made their way outside. It was colder outside than Fern was expecting. They began walking through the snow, which was tiring them out since it was almost three feet of snow. Fern and Sara never slowed though. They kept pushing until they could see the lights of the small town. They picked up the pace, eager to get back home. "Dad's outside chopping wood for the fireplace." Fern's mom's words played in her head. There would be a nice toasty fire, and they would be out of the cold snow. Walking on the road was a lot easier than walking in the snow, although the road was covered in ice. Finally, the little yellow house came into view. Fern's house was small, but it wasn't too small for Fern. They ran until they came to the front door, and without knocking they barged in. "Mom! Dad!" Fern shouted. Her voice echoed, but there was no answer. "Dad?" She called again. "Mom?" Still no one answered. Weird. "Maybe there outside," Sara said, and they both went outside. The ax was stabbed into a stump, but Fern's Dad was nowhere to be seen. Fern and Sara walked back into the house. It was like they just disappeared. But that was impossible! Right? They continued to look around the house. The kitchen, the laundry room, even the bathroom. "Maybe they're out looking for us." Sara reasoned. Sara always thought of the most logical explanations, which is good sometimes, but it made it very boring to hunt ghosts with. "Good point." Fern replied. They slowly walked back outside to look around again. But still, they found no one. "Maybe we should just wait for them here? Im sure they'll come back soon." Sara said. They tried to call their parents again, but no one answered. "So, what ya wanna do while we wait for them to get back?" Fern asked.
"Wanna watch a movie?" Sara suggested.
"Sure! Whacha wanna watch?"
"I don't know. Hows Star Wars or something sound?""That sounds good to me." Fern and Sara turned the tv on and put on Star wars. Before they knew it, they ended up watching the whole first trilogy.
"Your parents still ain't back yet?" Sara asked.
"It's been like 7 hours! Where are they?"
"Well, since they're not back yet, wanna watch the next series?" Sara asked her.
"Why not." Fern stepped into the kitchen where she grabbed a bag of popcorn from one of the cabinets and set it in the microwave. They played the next movie, A New Hope, the 4k version while they snacked.
The sun was going down. 5:56 PM. They've been gone all day! Fern thought to herself. It was really out of the ordinary for her parents to be gone this long. She and Sara have been talking and hanging out. The movie ended a while ago, and her parents still weren't home.
"Well, I guess it's a sleepover." Sara joked.
'I mean, I guess. We can make a fort like when we were children." Fern joked back, immediately regretting sounding weird. Sara laughed, and replied "Like, out of pillows and blankets?" The more they talked about, the more it actually sounded fun. "You know what, let's do it," Sara said.
"I mean, might as well. You can't just walk back to your house." They walked upstairs and into Fern's room, and began trying to figure out how to make a tent. She ended up using the blanket she covered up with at night, since it was huge, and used the chair that was beside her bed to hold up the blanket. Once she was finished, they had a decent tent.
Sara left the room for a few minutes and came back up with something in her arms. "I found some snacks, are we allowed to have these?" Sara said as she dropped a bag of chips in the homemade tent.
"Of course." They both got in the tent and began talking about random stuff, sharing stories and stuff. The time slowly tik away.6:00 PM
7:00 PM
8:00 PM
9:00 PM
"What if they never come back?" Sara asked.
"Why would you think that? They'll be back." Sara didn't look too sure. "It's going to be okay Sara." Sara's eyes closed as she slowly fell asleep. Why would Sara think that? They would probably be home by the time they wake up, surely. Fern felt tired too. She closed her eyes, feeling them relax, and slowly but surely, she drifted away.
