The town remained silent as Fern and Sara hiked back to the house. Fern's shoes were full of melted snow (I believe it's called water) by the time they made it to the house. Fern expected the house to be hot. She was wrong. The whole house was freezing cold. She knew it was going to be cold, but still, she was so used to it being nice and warm inside, she expected it to be like normal.
"What are we going to do?" Sara asked, shivering.
"I don't know." Fern replied. She closed the door, and she and Sara sat on the couch. Sara pulled out her phone, Fern figured she was checking to see if she had gotten any texts.
"I probably need to charge my phone actually." Fern turned her phone on, and it said nine percent on the top.
"What if we don't.." She was cut off by a flicker in the lights. Then, a blackout hit causing the town to drop to an eerie silence. "okay don't panic!" Fern said. A bright white light shined on Ferns' face. "Good thing I didn't kill my phone's battery trying to call people." Sara joked.
"My phone still has power. just, not a lot." Fern checked her phone. 19%
"You stay here, I'm going to go and see if I can get the power back on," Fern said. She reached into the cabinet and grabbed one of the emergency flashlights her family put there. She stood up and began walking towards the front door. The sun was starting to go down, so it was getting colder. Fern began walking around the house to the backyard, where the generator was kept. She had no idea how to turn it on, but it couldn't be that hard. right? Fern shined her light around for a little bit. Suddenly she noticed the plastic handle type thing. she'd seen it on a lot of other things, like her dads' chainsaw. She wrapped her hand around it and pulled as hard as she could. It made a spinning-type noise for a second, then nothing. Fern pulled again. Still nothing. Fern kept pulling, but it didn't start. Maybe I'm doing it wrong. she thought to herself. The sound of snow crunching made Ferns' heart stop. She shined her light in the direction of the noise. Nothing. She felt chills go down her spine. She realized now how dark it had gotten. Fern knew something wasn't right. It's an odd feeling. She slowly stood up and began walking backward, still shining the light at where the noise was coming from. Suddenly, she heard a noise that made her soul leave her body. A scream. Sara! Fern began running as ras as she could. she ran around the house and burst into the front door. "Sara!" She shouted. Nothing. She shut the door and locked it. "SARA!" Sara's phone was laying on the floor, flashlight facing up. Fern rushed over to it and started looking around the room. "Where are you!?" She shouted, panicking. Suddenly, she heard a noise behind her, that sounded like a pistol being loaded, and the voice of a man she didn't recognize.
"Drop the flashlight!"
