((Indy's POV))

I know the instant Max puts the shield up we're doomed. The prince smiles and directs his magic not at me, but at Max. Max yelps and is thrown across the room into a pillar, then slides down, breaking both his legs very clearly into different pieces. He looks dazed, and I hear our enemy laughing behind me as the pillar cracks and starts to lean in Max's direction.

"Max! Max, move!" I scream. I start sprinting to help him, and I see he's trying to move, but he's either to stunned or in to much pain to get anywhere fast. Time seems to slow down, and I see the moment where he gives up. He stops clawing at the ground, stops trying, and just shuts his eyes as the pillar crushes him.

I can't breathe. I can't move. I wait to see Max's smiling face pop up from behind the pillar, see that it didn't crush him, that it just missed him, but that never happens. He's gone. Time speeds back up, and reality sinks in. I feel a rush of adrenaline and turn on the laughing prince.

"His face! You're face! That was brilliant!" He shouts. I start walking towards him, and untie my bandana. He stop laughing and looks at me with amusement.

"Aww, is little baby Princeton finally realizing he can't hide from reality?" I roll up the bandana so it's like a short rope.

"My name is INDY!" I growl. He shakes his head, still smiling. Out of the corner of my eye, I see Alice run up the stairs, then stop. She yells something I can't quite hear.

"Your name is Princeton!" The Prince yells, "YOU'RE NAME IS PRINCETON AND YOU COULDN'T SAVE YOUR FRIEND! YOU FAILED! YOU FAILED TO RUN FROM ME, YOU ARE NOTHING BUT A STUPID KID! YOU ALWAYS WERE!" He hasn't moved, and now about five feet from him, I stop. I hold my revolver up to his head, and his smile flickers.

"You won't do it, will you? Come on, Prince, you wouldn't kill your brother, would you?" Alice, who I assume had been slowly making her way around trying to find where Max was, gasps. The room is silent. For the first time in this fight, my hand is not shaking. One second, and he would be dead. Just a twitch of my finger on the trigger. Instead, I lower the gun.

"No, I wouldn't." I mutter. He grins, and opens his mouth to keep talking, when I move the gun and shoot his knee. He looks shocked, and I shoot his other knee, causing him to collapse. I drop to the ground and pull the bandana around his neck.

"I would never kill anyone I considered family. You're not brother of mine!" I hiss. His eyes widen, first out of fear, then because he can't breathe. He claws at my arms, trying to get me away from him.

"His name was Max, did you know that? Maxia Solace! HIS NAME WAS MAX, AND HE WAS MY FRIEND, AND YOU KILLED HIM BECAUSE YOU KNEW IT WOULD HURT! WELL GUESS WHAT? HE WAS MY FAMILY! HE AND ALICE ARE MY FAMILY, NOT YOU! YOU ARE NOTHING!" I scream at him. His eyes are wide, and his grip on my arms is starting to get weaker. He looks at me, and hisses through gritted teeth.

"You... freak." Then, his face relaxes, his hands drop, and he stop struggling all together. I drop the bandana and get back to my feet. I hear footsteps and turn around to see Alice standing and staring at me, eyes wide. I wait for her to scream at me, or hit me, or yell that she knew she was right all along, but she doesn't. She just stands there, shocked.

"Indy I... I'm so sorry. I'm so, so sorry." She whispers. I smile slightly, but I'm not really happy. I walk past her and go to the fallen pillar. Water from cracks in the ceiling is starting to pool around the crushed marble. I push aside some rubble, then kneel down and start trying to find some sign of Max. Everything is wet from the water, and smaller pieces of stone stick to my hands.

"Indy what...?" Alice asks. She gets down as well, helping me, but isn't sure why. I move a few pieces and stop. Max's limp hand is just visible, his usual fingerless glove is torn, but his skin is surprisingly unscathed. I start pushing debris away, but he's mostly stuck under the pillar, so I only recover a few pieces of tattered fabric.

I lace my fingers in his, and suddenly everything that's happened in the past few minutes hits me, and I break down. Alice looks up and sees me, and the visible part of Max's body. I close my eyes, I don't want to see Max dead. I don't want Max to be dead.

"Alice! What happened?!" A voice I don't know yells. I feel a pair of hands start to pull me away from Max, and I open my eyes again.

"NO! NO NO LEAVE ME ALONE!" I scream. I struggle for a moment, then realize that I sound like a little kid and stop fighting. I just sob and reach out for Max as Alice drags me away, then stop and sets me on the floor at the feet of four people I don't know.

"Alice what happened?" Two voices start quizzing her. Two others run past her, and I see them take my place in trying to recover Max, calling his name hopelessly. I see the other two people walk over to me, and one offers me a hand up. I take it, and wipe my eyes with my other hand. I see two people, one with Alice's eyes and another that has Alice's hair. Her parents, I guess. I don't give a damn. I walk past them, back over to Max and the two people trying to rescue his body.
