Yes, this is the end.
Maybe it seems a bit to soon, or that I drew this out to long, but for me, this is right.
I'm not saying we'll never see these characters again, in fact, I am planning out a second story now, but seconds are never quite as good as the first.
And now, the final chapter.
One Year Later~
A figure stands in front of a large screen, desperately typing into the keyboard and yelling into a headset. They have a crew cut, their dark hair curling up in the front. Their black tang top and knee short pants and dusted with cumulus of the ceiling, and the ground is shaking beneath their combat boots.
"Alice give it up, you can't hack it in time!" A panicked voice screams through the headset.
"I got this, Max hexed the door when he left, no one is getting in through there." Alice responds through gritted teeth. When Indy finally claimed the throne, some squids weren't happy with the alliance with the humans. They used old bases from both sides of he first war, added new tech, and started a full blown war.
"I said the door wasn't moving, but the wall might. You need to get out of there!" Max yells. His voice is more glitchy, magic tends to do that.
"One sec... got it! How close are they? Indy?" Before her friend can answer, there's a pounding on the door. Alice curses, then jumps up onto the table, pulling herself into the ventilation system.
"I see your tracker, I'll meet you under the second grate, Indy is by the first, just in case things go wrong." Max adds.
"I got ya, and I think I hear the wall cracking. That was a close one." Alice whispers through the mic. Indy sprints across a ruined room, diving behind a table he flipped over earlier as his ex army opens fire. He jumps up and fires a few lethal rounds before needing to move locations again.
"Good for you, I need backup as soon as possible!" Indy fires another round, then hides behind a fallen part of the ceiling. He frowns at his now slightly tattered pants. Those were new.
While Alice has cut her hair, Indy's has gotten longer. Max likes putting it into little pony tales when Indy falls asleep. Indy does not like that.
"You kids doing okay? The computers seem to be back to normal, but it sounds bad." A new voice joins the call. Indy grins, and two voices cheer, "Seto!" Max yells "Dad!"
"Listen, you can't fight this off. I can't get in there if you are still being fired at. Everyone group together, Max, put up a deflection shield so I won't get killed trying to save you three."
"Got ya, dad. Alice, drop in on my air vent, I'll see if I can teleport Indy over here." Max adds quickly. He adjusts his headset, slightly annoyed with the glitchyness, then summons an army of snowballs and sends them after the enemy. Everyone it touches gets frozen in place. He learned that one on accident a few months ago, Alice hasn't quite forgiven him yet.
There's the sound of metal above head, then Alice drops from the ceiling. She glances from Max to the frozen soldiers.
"I'm here... Max, try to send Indy over now. If anyone unfreezes, I'll get them." She draws a dagger from a nearly invisible sheath strapped to her upper leg, and starts pacing among the soldiers. Max is pretty sure a few of them unfroze, but don't move in fear of Alice.
"Whoa- not used to teleporting." Indy yelps, appearing three inches higher than the ground and falling into Max.
"You'll get used to it eventually." Max turns and smiles at Seto, who has (a lot more gracefully) teleported into the room. Indy turns a light shade of red, but doesn't make any comment.
"And we're back!" Everyone takes a half step back, taking a moment to let their eyes adjust to the dimly lighted main hall of home. Seto smiles, nods, and walks over to Dawn, who is standing by the door looking confused about a paper she's holding.
"Hey, we teleported over a mile and didn't pass out! Improvement!" Max cheers. Indy groans and leans on Max, and Alice rolls her eyes.
"Yeah yeah, speak for yourself. I'm going to head over to first aid and get this burn cleaned up, then I'm going to bed. Indy, get those scratches cleaned up. Max... you're fine." Max laughs lightly, and follows his two friends to the first aid room. There are a few new recruits learning first aid, or receiving it, hanging out there that look stunned to be in the same room as the trio.
"We've knocked out... ten stations now? And you said there were, like, a hundred. This is taking ages." Max comments. Alice shrugs.
"Actually, we only have eighty seven more, not ninety. We're getting better, too. Now that we're more used to teleporting, it may not take two days to travel place to place. By next year, we may have twice as many down. Maybe more." Indy nods, then winces slightly as a medic cleans his scratches.
"Yeah, and don't you like doing missions? When we don't have one, you complain all day." A recruit giggles behind them, and Max doesn't seem to care.
"You're right. I'll meet you guys upstairs, okay?" Indy nods and Alice shrugs. Then there's the awkward silence that hardly ever happens when Max is around, but always happens when Alice and Indy are alone.
"So... your folks are at the graveyard today?" Indy asks. Alice nods and shrugs.
"Yeah, it's the first full year without Jason, so... Yeah. We lost a lot of people, apparently. I didn't know them." Indy nods, and frowns slightly.
"You didn't want to go with them..?" Alice shakes her head.
"No way. I've been there once, and I learned I'm not fond of the place. It creeps me out, and I always felt like I was being watched. When I left I... never mind." She gives a fake smile, thanks the medics, and both teen leave the room.
"You what? I won't judge, or tell Max." Indy asks. Alice laughs humorlessly.
"It's just, and I know it sounds like Max's psycho faze, but I could have sworn I saw... people. People I know couldn't have been there." Indy stops walking and frowns slightly, then shakes it off and continues upstairs.
"Well, on that note, goodnight." Alice chimes. Indy nods, and Alice walks down the hall to her room. Indy hesitates, her words echoing in his head, but he then shakes it off. She was just seeing things, it can't be connected to what happened with Max.
Right?
If you're interested in that kind of stuff, I think I may update one last time with little things about my characters that I made up while planning, but never really came to play a part in the story. You know, sexualities, pet peeves, things like that.
Thank you for reading my story, reading your comments have been the highlights of my day. Also, if you have any questions on characters, like if you are unclear on if they lived or not, be sure to ask!
