The next month went by faster than I thought it would. I did my best to blend into the background and stay out of any trouble. David kept his word and checked in on me when he could.
I had gone to visit my mother and sister for a day and made sure they knew I was doing okay. I felt an ache in my stomach as I hugged them goodbye, if I knew what was coming... I would have hugged them longer; I would have told them I loved them one more time.
*Present Time*
It was the middle of the night; I was awoken by the screams of women and the clanking of swords. I shot up quickly and peeked out the window. "Sky?Wha_what's happ_ppening?" Abby asked as she joined me at the window. I was looking around, trying to see what was going on. Thats when I saw the symbol of King Victory...
"We're under attack." I said in almost a whisper. I knew Abby had heard me because she stumbled back falling on her bed. She stared at me not knowing what to say. I saw knights fighting at the gate. I saw a few women hiding in the shadows, with nowhere to go. I turned to Abby, "Listen to me. I need to go and get those women. I pointed to them, and she looked at me in horror.
"Are you crazy?!" She shouted with her eyes wide. Maybe I was but, I knew if I didn't, they would be killed.
"They will be killed Abby! I have to. I need you to stay here, don't leave and don't open the door for anyone but me. I will knock three times." I knocked on the desk three times. "Just like that. Do you understand?" She nodded and I slipped out of the room before she could argue with me. I stayed close to the wall as I made my way quietly down the hall. I approached the opening leading to the kitchen and spotted the group of girls hiding.
I didn't Know how to get their attention. I looked around and finally spotted a half-eaten apple laying on the ground. I rolled it across the way, and it hit one of the girls and she jumped a little before finding my eyes. I put my finger to my lips signaling them to stay quiet. I looked around making sure it was clear. I motioned for them to come to me. The three girls quickly stood up and ran towards me, as the last one came into the doorway I heard a deep voice yell, "Over here! I saw someone!"
I whispered to them, "run as fast as you can down the hall. Knock three times on room 107, tell the lady Skylar sent you. Go!" I shewed them down the hall and stayed as quiet as I could. I pressed myself against the wall hoping the man wouldn't see me. I looked down the hall and didn't see the girls. A sign of relief came over me knowing they were safe. I closed my eyes and listened to the wind. I could hear the footsteps and creaking of old armor growing louder as the knight approached me. He stopped just before the opening and spoke.
"Come out now, and I might let you live." He snarled in my direction. Maybe if he saw I was a helpless woman he would let me go.
I slowly took a step out of the hall, and he drew his sword. "Please_ don't hurt me, I'm only a servant here." The tip of his sword was at my throat, and I could feel my heart beating on it. My blood ran cold when I heard a familar voice.
"Let her g_go!" I turned my head quickly causing the blade to cut me. Abby.
"Well, well, well. What do we have here? A brave warrior here to save her friend?" He laughed at us. I felt the butt of his sword contact my face knocking me to the ground. He grabbed Abby and held his sword to her throat. Terror filled my body. The look of fear in her eyes broke me, tears rolled down her face as she cried out to me.
"Let her go! She is just a child, please!" I dropped to my knees and begged him. He snarled at me and loosened his grip on her.
"Anyone who serves Bryon, deserves death!" He sliced her throat throwing her to the ground. Her body fell and she gasped for air as she bled out. I ran to her and pressed my hands to her throat.
"No! No, Abby!" Tears rolled off my cheeks as I felt her take her last breath. "Abby... I_I'm so sorry Abby! This is my fault!" I cried over her as I closed her eyes.
The man pulled me by my hair dragging me towards the gates, I screamed out and clawed at his hands. Anger filled me. I dug my heels into the ground and forced him to stop. I elbowed him in the knee causing him to let go on my hair, he kicked me in the ribs sending me flying. A wall stopped me as I crashed into it. I got to my feet and swirled my hand around my head. I let the wind fill my body and stepped forward as I forced a gust of wind from my palm. The man crashed against the opposite wall falling with a loud thud.
I ran back to Abby and held her in my arms as I sobbed. I rocked back and forth, "I am so sorry Abs, I should have saved you, it should have been me!" I stayed there, holding her for what seemed like hours. The sound of footsteps startled me. I got to my feet and prepared to fight when I saw his face. David.
"Skylar! Thank god, are you okay?" He approached me and stopped when he saw Abby. I fell to my knees beside her. "What happened?" He crouched down next to me taking in what happened.
"She was supposed to stay in the room! I told her not to follow me. She's dead because of me!" David pulled me into a hug as I cried. He noticed the man laying lifeless on the ground.
"Is that him? What did you do Sky?" He looked at me with pleading eyes.
"I'm sorry, he was going to kill me too... He laughed while he cut her throat. I just_ I got so angry!" He got to his feet and stabbed his sword threw his chest and returned to me.
"It's okay, no one will ever know. You did good Skylar. This is not your fault." He helped me up as his men rushed over to us.
"Sir! They're headed towards the wastelands. Should we send the guards?"
