"Miss." I opened my eyes and saw Claire standing over me. I gave her a smile as I forced myself to wake up. I cleared my throat and she handed me a cup of water. "Goodmorning, how are you feel dear?" She sounded worried.
"It's just a scratch, don't worry Claire." I smiled at her. She removed the bandages slowly, revealing the wound. I glanced down at it, I saw what seemed to be around 13 stitches along the side of my ribs. She grabbed a wet cloth and gently cleaned my wound. She placed some fresh bandages down and wrapped a cloth around my waist.
"Do you think you can stand?" I nodded as I slowly moved my legs to the side of the bed and sat up slowly. Claire helped me to my feet as I groaned slightly causing her stop. "Are you okay?" I stood the rest of the way up and smiled. She helped me dress, pulling a simple, loose, gray dress over my head and then pinning my hair up in a bun. "The King has requested your presence on the training field. Are you sure you can walk?"
"Where's my staff?" I looked around, spotting it in the corner. She walked over to it and handed it to me. I steadied myself and began to walk as I used my staff as a cane.
Claire walked beside me as we slowly made our way to the training field. A crowd mixed villagers and warrior stood around the King and Prince. Their eyes turned towards me as I slowly made my way toward the King. As I reached them, I took a deep breath as I tried to catch my breath.
The King stepped forward "As you all know, yesterday Miss Skylar Williams took the Royal Guard Test. She fought hard, showed great endurance, strength, skill and bravery." He smiled as he looked at me. "Which is why, after a very quick vote of the guard. I am proud to welcome our new Warrior of the Royal Guard, Lady Skylar."
My face filled with joy as I listened to his words, I, did it? Prince Christopher approached his father carrying a sword. He stood beside him, and the King lifted the sword as he faced me. I looked over at Chris and he mouthed the words "Kneel" to me.
I slowly knelt down groaning as I bowed my head slightly. "I, King Byron Hamilton here by Knight thy Skylar Williams." He tapped each of my shoulders as he spoke. "Rise Warrior, as a Knight of the Silver Relm." I slowly got to my feet, smiling. I looked to the crowd as the King finished his speech. He excused himself and left.
A young girl ran up to me and hugged my waist. I flinched as she hit my wound but, I smiled as I looked at her, "Hi sweetie, what is your name?"
"Susie! I want to be a guard just like you when I'm older." she shouted with enthusiasm.
I laughed as how confident she was. "I will be rooting for you young warrior." She ran back to her mum yelling proudly that I called her a young warrior.
The first warrior I fought yesterday stepped towards me. I braced myself for another one of his sexists' comments about me being a woman... "You fought well yesterday, I wanted to apologize for my behavior. It is my honor to fight alongside you miss." He bowed.
"Thank you, sir." He smiled at me and then walked away. A few of the other men congratulated me and David hugged me tight and checked to make sure I was alright.
After the crowd had pretty much vanished Claire placed her hand on my back. "Let's get you back to bed dear." I shot her a look of relief and she laughed.
"I can take her." I looked over at Christopher who was walking towards us. Claire smiled at me and left very quickly. I hadn't spoken or really seen him since he kissed me, I wasn't really sure where we stood. He placed his hand on back as he walked with me to my room. "How_ how are you feeling?"
"I'm fine, it's just a scratch." We reached my room and he helped me in. I looked in the mirror and noticed a small blood stain on my dress.
"Oh, shit. You must have ripped your stitches. Let me check." He stopped as he met my eyes.
