I sat on my horse, staring out into the trees as we rode. The night air surrounded me; I could hear the sounds of the forest filling the silence. Our army pushed forward, as he approached the boarder, we split into three groups. We all had our missions. I rode behind Christopher...our mission was to attack the castle and kill the King. They knew that I would be their best shot at getting into the castle and close to the King. I could see the fear on some of the faces around me as we got closer.
Before I knew it, the battle had erupted and there were men swinging swords all around me. I could see the castle in the distance. Christopher turned toward me, shouting. I could barely make out what he said but a few men around us nodded and we all charged towards the castle. I looked around... there were too many standing in the way of the castle. We would never make it.
I jumped off my horse, planting my feet into the ground. I took a deep breath as I closed my eyes. I spun my staff quickly in a circle above my head, drawing the air into a funnel. I'd never done this, only seen it in the book... I looked towards the sky; doubt filled me when I saw the tiny funnel that had formed... was I not strong enough? I heard my father's voice echo in my head... "Let the air come to you, relax. Let your body breath it in and direct it in the direction you want it to go."
I took a slow breath in, letting the air circle around me. I pulled it in, bending it, pushing it towards the funnel. I opened my eyes and watched as the tornado grew. I let out a small gasp as I laughed. I did it! I slowly brought it to the ground. I let my body flow in the wind as I guided it straight towards the men. I saw Christopher stop and order his men to stand back as I walked forward past them. I stepped forward pushing it out as I grunted. I watched as the tornado sweep through the Ash warriors, sucking them into the funnel, spitting them out as it stormed towards the castle. I breathed hard, out of breath as I watched it slowly spin out and evaporate into the air.
"Holy shit... that was insane. Are you okay?" I felt Christophers hand around my waist steadying me. I slowly nodded, meeting his smile. "Head towards the tower, I'll meet you inside." He motioned towards the cliff. I nodded starting back towards my horse, his hand grabbed me stopping me. I turned towards him; his eyes focused on me. "Be careful Sky." I kissed him quickly, leaving him as he mounted his horse.
I broke away and headed towards the cliff. I tied my horse to the tree, expanding my staff. I ran and jumped into the air, gliding towards the top tower of the castle. Anger filled my body as I landed on the stone floor. I searched around, running down the hall trying to find my way towards the throne room.
I heard a man shout towards me bring me to a stop as I faced him. He charged towards me, swinging his sword. I sparred with him blocking his hits. I sweep his feet out from under him and held my staff to his throat, "Where is the throne room." I pressed it into his throat. He stayed silent... he was loyal to the king. I growled in frustration, jabbing my staff into his windpipe, I heard a cracking sound as his body went limp. I stared at his body for a moment reflecting at how my life had changed over the last year. I took a deep breath as I headed down the stairs. I looked around as I saw a group of warriors battling, I knew I was close... I saw a large door behind the men, it had the royal symbol. I made my way, sneaking past the warriors fighting and send a gust of air, blowing the door open.
The King stood at the foot of his throne; sword drawn. I narrowed my eyes and let the air fill my body send bursts of air at the guards charging towards me. I was able to knock two to the ground, one reached me, swinging his sword barley missing my head as I moved back. I pushed a ball of air into his gut. He flew across the room landing with a thud against the wall. I dopped to a crouch, sweeping my arms as I spun the other direction, sending a wave of air the threw the other two guards against the wall, their body's fell limp. I glared at he the King who was now alone.
"So, the great Air Warrior is a girl." He let out a laugh that angered me. I was out of breath; it was hard to focus... I could feel how tiered my body was. I tried to send a gust of air towards him but hit him, not even phasing him. "The Air Warrior is weak; you don't stand a chance against a King."
He lunged towards me, I moved back meeting his sword with my staff. He swung hard and fast, pushing me towards the throne. I grunted as I tried to keep blocking his blows. He plowed his shoulder into my chest knocking me to the ground. I landed against the stairs and cried out as my back crashed into them. A wave of pain shot through my weakened body. He stood over me, the tip of his sword digging into my neck. I felt a trickle of blood sliding down my throat.
He had a smug look on his face as he laughed. "Any last words, Air Warrior?" He spat down at me, his words dripping with cockiness.
I closed my eyes as tears fell, I took a shaky breath in as I awaited my death.
