ophelia loved hallowe'en. she loved dressing up and getting candy out of it. granted, spending hallowe'en in hogwarts meant no trick or treat-ing, she still managed to dress up this year. she and venus have been planning their costume for a while now, and the looks on the boy's faces were priceless.
it was venus that suggested they dressed up as them a while back, and ophelia instantly agreed. so the night before the feast, the two girls stole regulus and evan's mostly used clothes.
the blonde greengrass wore regulus' plain green sweater and some brown sweat pants, she topped it off by holding a tale of two cities. venus, on the other hand, wore one of the many black hawaiin shirts that evan's owns with white shorts.
"how do we look?" ophelia laughed as she and venus approached the two of them. regulus was agape but his mouth turned into a smile as he subtly wrapped his arm around her waist.
evan, who was dressed as his favourite quidditch player, not-so-subtly grabbed his girlfriend and placed his lips on his girlfriend. at first, ophelia and regulus thought it was sweet but their feelings changed when the two of them started eating each other's face off.
regulus, who was dressed as some muggle author, guided ophelia outside of the common room, heading to the great hall without their friends.
when the two of them arrived, almost everyone was wearing costumes. someone went as a troll, some came as their professors — profesor mcgonagall definitely did not appreciate james doing so while profesor dumbledore was more than please with sirius.
speaking of siring black, he, alongisde the marauders, approached the couple. "what are you supposed to be?" ophelia asked remus.
the boy grinned. remus lupin grinned. "i'm joseph fry."
"who is joseph fry?" regulus inquired. it was a funny scene, really. regulus black, peacefully interacting with the marauders. but, for some reason, no one found this odd. it was as though, in another life, they all were meant to be friends.
groans and a series of 'why did you do that?' came from the three other gryffindors but remus simply waved his hand, dismissing them. "he was the one that made the first modern chocolate bar in 1847 through doable chocolate paste. he did it by adding melted caceo butter back into ductch cocoa."
ophelia laughed and sirius looked at her, then at regulus, then back at her. "did you go as the biggest dork of the year?"
regulus rolled his eyes, slightly tightening the grasp he had around ophelia's waist, causing her to laugh again. she faced him and placed a kiss on his cheek, "yes, but he is a very adorable dork."
the expression on the four boys faces were unprecedented. they awkwardly said their goodbyes as they hurried back to their table, unsure of what to do with what they just saw.
even regulus, whose cheeks were flaming, didn't know what to do as ophelia grabbed his arm and led them to a seat. she was acting as though she didn't just kiss her fiance's cheek in front of her ex-boyfriend, his brother, in front of his friends.
as ophelia sat down, unaware of the tomato regulus beside her, professor slughorn approached the couple, his smile growing — if it were even possible — at the sight of their intertwined fingers. she felt uncomfortable at his smile and removed their fingers from it's connection.
"i'm happy to hear that you'll be attending our next dinner, ophelia, dear," the potions professor said and if he weren't there, now sitting in front of the couple — his eyes carefully staring at her, she would have thrown up.
there were a lot of things that ophelia hated, yes, but oh, merlin's balls! she despised the slug club. she thought it was a coward's way of making connections into the world, to make one relevant thanks to the talent of others.
regulus agreed but he begged her to accompany him, days prior. a 7th year ravenclaw has been eyeing him during the dinners and apparently would feel better if his fiance was there.
"please, pan!" regulus whisper-shouted, he was across the girl as she continued to read her book. they've been at it for half an hour now and ophelia has yet to agree. "jones won't stop eyeing me like a piece of candy!"
ophelia pointed at the 'silence' sign, trying to get him to remember they were in a library. after a few minutes, silence really did follow. but as she was about to turn her page, she caught a glimpse of regulus' puppy eyes.
she rolled her eyes, shutting her book, and looking at the boy. "and what does me being there, do to her infatuation towards you? i'm attractive, i know, but jones doesn't swing that way, art."
regulus rolls his eyes, he wished he could say differently. if she were evan, he would have said something like 'you wish you were that attractive.' but she wasn't evan. she was ophelia greengrass, and of course he agreed with that statement.
"i doubt jones will make a move on me when," regulus paused. "my very attractive fiance would be there with me?"
how could she say no to that? to his cute puppy eyes and his flattery? but now, she cursed his eyes and his tongue as she smiled politely at the head of her house. "as long as regulus is there, i'll be as well, professor." the smile on the man's face indicated that ophelia just figured out how to make the man happy.
"i am pleased to hear that!" he exclaimed as regulus place his arm around ophelia, the same polite smile on his face. "oh, the days regulus spent in the potions room, helping me clean up while talking about you!" that peaked ophelia's interested.
she turned to look at regulus, who was about to say something but she beat him to it as she turned to face the professor once more. "what did you he say about me?"
professor slughorn waved his hand. "typical teenage boy things. he even made you a poem when you and sirius started dating! by the way, i'm glad you got over your little bad-boy phase and went for the better brother," he winked, and if ophelia was gonna explode from curiosity, she would have punched the man.
"a poem?" she said, a teasing tone as she smirked at regulus.
"i still remember it!"
"professor, i don't really think that is necessary—"
"nothing is more beautiful than you, and nothing is happier than me with you. there was more to it, i believe, but i cannot recall." professor slughorn said and the teasing smirk on ophelia's face dropped. the man took this as his cue to leave as he stood up and walked away, probably off to bug another couple.
regulus studied ophelia's blank expression, her eyes still boring into his soul, as he awkwardly chuckled. "you knew i was in love with you, why are you so... still?"
"i—i knew you were but," she stuttered out, tearing her gaze from his eyes and back at the food. "i didn't know how much."
"would it have changed things?" regulus asked, brushing the blonde hair off the girl's shoulders, causing her to shiver. "would you feel guilty about the fact that 14-year old me ranted to our professor about you? guilty enough to love me back?"
ophelia hesitated, "i wouldn't do that to you," she answered eventually. "if, when, i fall in love with you, it would be real. not out of guilt nor obligation. but, because, you — regulus black — will be the last dream of my soul."
