The Night Before

The clock struck twelve

The Liberty rang her bell

The waters began to swell

The tide was on the rise

The Indian Moon was late

The Indian Summer had come and gone

The autumn leaves had been washed away

The chill of winter was soon expected

The boat began to rock to and fro

The surveyors' plans were quickly scattered all about the deck

The original plans would now come into play

The crew all hurried to their posts

The drill had been practiced to perfection

The only trouble was, in the dark they lacked direction

The beacons needed to be lighted

The fuse had long since been set

The ship's stoker went running

The flaming torch, burnt bright in his hand

The flaming torch, burnt bright in his hand

The job would soon be done

The clumsy oaf slipped and fell

The luck of the draw, saw it fly to the floor

The clumsy oaf had bashed his head, luckily, he wasn't dead

The hand of the Devil reached out, but

The pale skin of Salmon Smithfield came in sight

The torch bearer she became

The torch bearer she became

The delicate touch of a woman was all that it took

The flaming torch ignited the fuse

The sparkling trails of light set off in every direction

The crew was holding its breath

The sound of silence was deafening

The beacons began to light one by one

The sound of raucous roaring and cheering began to echo

The sound of raucous roaring and cheering began to echo

The rising waters of the Salt Marshes were illuminated

The designated crew now manned the capstans

The captain made the call

The crew began to haul

The Liberty Belle was a tough old bird, but

The big girl cried like a baby, as her hull scraped along the marsh bottom

The sound was like the birth of a new-born baby, to the Chief Engineer

The old girl would soon be free

The river queen was securely tethered to her deep water mooring

The crew were knackered, but this was no time for snoring
