~Alex~
Months went by fast. It was mid April. Kenji and I hung out a lot. At restaurants and waffle houses again. We went for walks at parks. He changed. He wasn't the person who I thought he was. The asshole. I usually slept over Lucia's house on weekends, but that Friday I wasn't sleeping over Lucia's. She and her mom were leaving town for a few days. For a funeral. Lucia said it was her Tia and she didn't want to talk about it. Not her mom's sister, but her dad's sister. At home, shit was weird. Weird as fuck. I didn't talk to anyone. Wake up, get ready for school, leave, come back home, eat a snack, do homework, eat dinner, shower, sleep, repeat. Lucia still picked me up everyday. Her house was like ten minutes away which was great.
I scrolled through Instagram, laying in my bed. My door swung open. Mom. I ignored her, continuing to eat my sour patches.
"Alex." her voice was emotionless.
"Mom." I matched her tone.
"Come downstairs. Dinner's done."
I got up and walked past her, going downstairs. I sat at the dinner table with John and Jack. I silently ate my steak and mashed potatoes. Mom joined us a few seconds later. John sipped on a beer.
"How was school, Jack?" John asked.
"It was good. Teri and Shawn got into another fight today." he ate some of his mashed potatoes. "Teri got in trouble because he punched Shawn first."
"Teri's a good kid." John said, taking a sip of his beer. "He should be out of trouble soon."
"Didn't Teri come over last Saturday or Friday?" mom asked. "Sweet kid. Shawn must've provoked him."
I rolled my eyes and put some stake in my mouth.
"Anything you want to say?" John asked.
I ignored him, getting on my phone.
"Put the phone away, Alex." my mom said "How was your day?"
I was surprised by her question. She never asked about my days. "Uh, it was fine. Gonna meet up with Kenji later."
"Who's Kenji?"
"A friend."
She glanced at John. "What's he like?"
I dropped my fork on my plate. "Why are you playing nice?"
"It's been tense between you and everyone else. I'm trying to make it less tense-"
I laughed. "I'm not hungry anymore." I got up from the table.
"Alex, sit down." my mom said. "We're eating dinner as a family."
I snarled. "You're not my fucking family."
"Language." John sipped his beer.
I continued on, ignoring him. "We might be blood related, but I lost my mom a long time ago."
I picked up my plate and went into the kitchen, emptying the rest of my food in the garbage and putting it in the sink. I got a text from Kenji.
