although jihyun had said it didn't matter, she found herself hung up on the whole alliance situation for more than a day. she felt like she was best at always figuring out the answers and solutions to anything, but for once, she was stumped. questions were swimming around in her mind and it was driving her insane.

"jihyun, careful." donghyuck said, holding his arm out in front of her when she nearly tripped on a log. "that's three times now."

"oh."

"what's on your mind? you're in a complete daze and usually you're very alert."

"just thinking about what we'll do if there are other tributes at the cornucopia." she lied and he could tell by the pause she took before speaking.

"well, we'll have to fight them." he shrugged. "and hopefully not die."

"jihyun!" chenle suddenly exclaimed, digging through his bag. she slowed down so that she was walking beside him and he pulled out a wooden slingshot. "i forgot i had this. i found it on the first day and i made a few arrows. it's almost like we were destined to meet."

"you're so cute!" jihyun awed, ruffling his hair as he grinned. she then took the slingshot and arrows from him, inspecting how it was crafted. chenle was truly talented. "thank you."

"you're welcome." he beamed as she placed them into her pockets.

"i never would have expected jihyun to have a soft spot for a tribute." renjun mumbled which she overheard.

"listen, chenle is the sweetest."

"he threatened to kill me not even five minutes ago." donghyuck said, rolling his eyes.

"hyuck's a liar." chenle sang.

"when did i say you could call me that?"

"you didn't but i don't need your permission." he said, skipping forwards.

"you—" the latter took a big step forwards, preparing to run after him, but renjun grabbed ahold of his arm, jolting him back.

"stop!" he yelled at chenle, pointing below them.

the group froze, staring at the ground. right underneath their feet was a large net. they had walked into a trap but it hadn't been set off yet. whoever had made it was intelligent and they hid it well.

"no one move your feet. we need to find the trigger and get off this." jihyun said. she looked above them at the tree and saw that there was a small bell. "there's a bell up there. it'll notify whoever made this."

"the trigger is here." mark said, pointing to a stick connected to string that chenle was standing with one foot on either side. if he moved it would be set off.

"everyone else can move. chenle, stay there." renjun said and the four hurried away from the net, leaving the district two boy standing alone.

"you're just leaving me here?!"

"no, you can't move yet so let me try to find out how to disable it." jihyun said, walking around the net to the tree. she could see the string attached to a branch not too high up. "someone toss me a knife."

mark took one out from his bag and raised his arm to throw it, but stopped. "are you sure you'll catch it?"

"just toss it."

flicking his wrist, he threw it. the way he threw it was not softly and not for her to catch, so when it went flying past her and landed in the tree next to her, she flinched.
