Today is the day.
The day I tell Reki that I'm in love with him.
I've gone over it a hundred times in my head, planned every word carefully. We're going skating today—just a normal practice session, nothing out of the ordinary. But at some point, in between tricks and laughter, I'll tell him. It should be simple. No overthinking. No backing out.
Except my heart is already racing.
I push aside the nerves and get out of bed, changing into a plain blue shirt and my usual gray sweatpants. I run a hand through my hair, smoothing it down before heading for the door.
"Bye, Mom!" I call as I slip on my shoes.
"Bye, sweetie. Be safe!" she replies from the kitchen.
I grab my skateboard and step outside, the morning air crisp against my skin. There's a nervous energy buzzing inside me, but it's mixed with excitement. Today could change everything.
Halfway to the skatepark, my phone vibrates in my pocket.
Reki <3
reki: hey sorry ill be a few minutes late
11:34 AMlanga: no worries, take your time. i'll skate around while i wait for you
11:36 AMI let out a breath and shove my phone back into my pocket. That's fine. A little extra time to clear my head. I push off on my board and start skating around, letting the familiar rhythm calm my nerves.
Eight minutes later, the sound of wheels rolling fast against pavement catches my attention.
"Langa!"
I turn just in time to see Reki skating toward me, his usual yellow hoodie slightly oversized, sleeves pushed up to his elbows. His ripped black jeans move effortlessly with him as he glides to a stop beside me, a bright grin stretched across his face. The sunlight catches in his messy red hair, making it glow like fire.
My chest tightens. He's beautiful.
"Hey," I greet, smiling back as he rolls up next to me.
We sit down on the edge of the park, talking about nothing and everything. Reki tells me about the new trick he's been trying to land, how he wiped out at least fifteen times attempting it. I laugh, picturing him sprawled out on the pavement, cursing under his breath before hopping up to try again.
Then his voice softens.
"Hey, Langa..."
I glance up at him, meeting his amber eyes. My stomach flips.
"Yeah?"
Reki hesitates, rubbing the back of his neck. "Do you... like anyone?"
My breath catches.
This isn't how I planned it. I was supposed to tell him on my own terms, in my own time. But the question is hanging between us now, and I can't lie.
I swallow, heart pounding. "Well, I—" I stop for a second, nerves creeping up my spine. Then, before I can talk myself out of it, I take a deep breath and say, "I like you, Reki."
The words leave my lips in a quiet rush. As soon as they're out, I snap my head to the side, too afraid to see his reaction. My palms are sweating.
Silence stretches between us, and for a moment, I think I've ruined everything.
Then I feel it—Reki's fingers brushing against my wrist, tentative at first, before he grips my arm and pulls me toward him.
And suddenly, I'm wrapped in his warmth.
Reki hugs me tight, his chin resting against my shoulder. My heart nearly stops.
"I like you too, Langa," he murmurs, his voice right next to my ear.
I freeze.
"...Wait. Really?" I pull back just enough to see his face, my brain struggling to process the words.
Reki grins, his cheeks flushed. "Well, yeah." He lets out a small laugh, squeezing my arms. "You're amazing and handsome, plus you're, like, the nicest person ever. Who wouldn't love you?"
My chest feels impossibly full, warmth blooming inside me like the sun breaking through clouds.
Reki beams at me, his classic goofy smile—the one I've loved for so long. The one that makes my heart feel like it's about to explode.
"So..." He fidgets, twisting the fabric of his hoodie between his fingers. "U-uhm... do you wanna be my boyfriend?"
The way he asks—like he's just as nervous as I was—makes me want to laugh. But I don't. Instead, I smile and gently pull him back into my arms, holding him close.
"Yeah," I whisper, feeling him melt into my embrace. "Of course."
I had planned to ask him out first, but honestly? This is perfect.
As long as we're together, that's all that matters.
