Saturdays were always the same for Reki and Langa. Skateboarding, schoolwork—well, half-hearted attempts at it—and then hanging out for the rest of the day. It was routine, familiar, and comforting. But today was different.

Today, Langa had asked Reki on their first official date.

The word date alone had sent Reki into a mini-crisis, nearly tripping over his own feet when Langa casually mentioned it the night before. Of course, they'd always been together, practically inseparable. But the idea of a date—something so intentional, something that meant more than just hanging out—made his heart race in a way he wasn't ready to admit.

Now, as Langa stood outside Reki's bedroom door, he hesitated before knocking.

Knock knock.

"Hey, can I come in?" Langa's voice was calm, but there was an excited edge to it.

"Yeah, sure, although—"

Reki was cut off as Langa pushed the door open.

And there he was—standing in the middle of the room, shirtless, hair a mess, eyes wide like a deer caught in headlights. Langa froze.

He'd seen Reki without a shirt before—at the beach, after skate sessions, during quick outfit changes—but somehow, this felt different. Maybe it was the dim lighting filtering through Reki's window, casting a soft glow on his skin. Maybe it was the way his hair looked even wilder than usual. Or maybe it was the frantic way he was spinning around his room, muttering to himself.

"A-ahaha, where's my shirt? I swear it was right here..." Reki groaned, rummaging through a pile of clothes on his bed.

Langa stepped forward, reaching out without thinking. His fingers wrapped gently around Reki's wrist, stopping him mid-movement. "Hey, calm down. I'll help you find it," he said, offering a small, reassuring smile.

Reki swallowed hard, feeling warmth creep up his neck. "A-alright then..."

They spent the next few minutes tearing through Reki's closet, drawers, and even under the bed, but his favorite black long-sleeve was nowhere to be found.

"Heyyyy, Mom! Did you wash my black shirt?" Reki called as he stomped out of the room, voice carrying down the hallway.

Langa chuckled, shaking his head as he sat down on Reki's bed. His eyes wandered across the room, finally landing on a collage of photos pinned to the wall.

It was filled with pictures of them together—skating, goofing off, hanging out at school. Some were of just Reki, some of just Langa, but most of them were of the two of them side by side, smiling, laughing, completely at ease.

Langa felt a warmth spread through his chest. He hadn't realized Reki had kept so many memories of them like this.

Langa's POV

I ran my fingers over the edges of one of the photos—a candid shot of Reki mid-laugh, probably taken by me. He looked so happy.

"Hey, sorry about that," Reki's voice broke through my thoughts. I turned to see him standing in the doorway, now fully dressed, arms stretching above his head. "Ready to go?"

I stood up quickly, grabbing his wrist again as I pulled him towards the door. "Yeah, let's go!"

The place I had picked wasn't far from Reki's house—a secluded patch of an open grassy field, quiet and peaceful. I had set everything up earlier in the evening before heading to Reki's, making sure everything was perfect.

A small tent-like canopy stood in the center, draped with soft blankets and fairy lights in shades of red and blue. There were pillows scattered inside, creating a cozy space just big enough for the two of us. Next to it, a small cooler held food and drinks.

The moment we arrived, Reki's eyes widened.

"Whoa..." He ran forward, spinning around to take it all in. "Langa, did you do all this?"

I nodded, shoving my hands in my pockets. "Yeah. Thought it'd be nice."

Reki turned to me, eyes practically glowing. "Dude, this is amazing!" He rushed toward the setup, plopping down onto the blankets. Then, as if a lightbulb went off in his head, he gasped dramatically. "Wait! Langa, do you think we can go stargazing?"

I chuckled, sitting down beside him. "Of course. That's kind of the whole point."

Reki grinned, lying back against the pillows. "Man, this is so cool. And the fairy lights? Red and blue? You totally planned that, didn't you?"

"Maybe," I admitted.

He nudged me playfully. "Dork."

We spent the next few hours talking, laughing, and eating the snacks I had packed. We reminisced about old skate tricks gone wrong, argued about who had better balance (me, obviously), and even played stupid little hand games like kids.

When the sky turned a deep indigo, dotted with stars, we lay back, side by side, staring up at the endless expanse. The cool night air wrapped around us, but it wasn't uncomfortable. If anything, it felt perfect.

At some point, Reki turned to look at me. "Hey, Langa?"

"Hm?"

"Thanks for this," he said softly. "I mean it. It's the best date ever."

I felt my heartbeat stutter, but I managed a small smile. "Yeah. It is."

It was late by the time we packed everything up and headed back to Reki's place. Neither of us really wanted the night to end, but we were both exhausted.

As soon as we got to his room, Reki flopped onto his bed, stretching out like a cat. "Ughhh, that was awesome. But my legs are dead."

I chuckled, sitting down beside him. A soft playlist was already playing in the background—our playlist. The one we had slowly built over time, filled with songs that reminded us of each other.

Reki sighed, shifting closer until his head rested against my shoulder. "You're warm," he mumbled sleepily.

I swallowed hard, feeling my face heat up. "You're just cold."

"Shhh," he whispered, barely awake now. "Goodnight, my love."

I froze. My breath caught in my throat.

Did he just—?

I stared down at him, heart pounding. His face was peaceful, eyes closed, completely unaware of what he had just said.

I exhaled slowly, letting myself relax. A small smile crept onto my lips as I leaned back against the pillows.

"How cute," I whispered, before closing my eyes and letting sleep take over.
