WOW! New year's eve is just tomorrow I can't believe how fast this year went by. Scary. Btw none of these oneshots are connected to each other.
School literally sucks.
There's no sugarcoating it. Waking up at 5 AM just to sit in class half-asleep, listening to teachers drone on about things I barely understand? Yeah, not exactly my idea of a good time. But today? Today's different. Today, I actually have something to look forward to—meeting up with Langa before school to skate around for a bit. And suddenly, waking up at this ungodly hour doesn't seem so bad.
I shuffle out of bed, groaning as I drag myself through my morning routine. My body is awake, but my brain is still very much in sleep mode. After throwing on my usual hoodie, I grab my skateboard, sling my backpack over my shoulder, and head out, my mind already buzzing with anticipation.
The morning air is crisp, carrying the faint scent of rain from last night. The streets are mostly empty, except for the occasional jogger or an old man walking his dog. The sky is a soft shade of blue, the sun barely beginning to rise. It's peaceful—almost too peaceful. But soon enough, I spot Langa standing at our usual meeting spot, leaning casually against his board, looking way too cool for someone who's been awake for five minutes.
As soon as I reach him, we go through our usual handshake—something we made up a while ago but still manage to mess up half the time.
Langa gives me a small smirk. "So, Reki, did you understand the homework? I couldn't figure out the last three questions for math."
I freeze mid-stretch. "WE HAD HOMEWORK?!"
Langa blinks. "Uh... yeah?"
My stomach drops. I can already picture my teacher's disappointed face, followed by the dreaded "Reki, this is the third time this week." I clutch my head dramatically. "Langa, what am I gonna do?! I have no excuse! I can't just tell him my dog ate my homework—I don't even have a dog!"
Langa watches my mini breakdown with mild amusement before shaking his head. "I'll give you the answers. It's really easy copying."
I stare at him for a moment, then sigh in relief. "Langa, you are a lifesaver. An angel. A gift from the heavens."
He chuckles, his cheeks dusting the lightest shade of pink, before leading me to a bench where he starts rattling off the answers like a robot. "Number one, -12(3x)... Number two, 492r... Number three..."
By the time I finish scribbling them down, I let out a dramatic exhale. "Alright, all done. Thank you so much, Langa." I huff, stuffing my notebook back into my bag.
Langa glances away, rubbing the back of his neck. "No problem, Reki."
The way he says my name sends a jolt through my chest. I pretend not to notice the warmth creeping up my own face and pull out my phone. Langa peeks over my shoulder, his head resting against mine.
"It's only six? Wow—we're super early."
"Yeah," I mumble. "I guess we've got time to hang around."
I scroll through some skate videos, watching pros pull off tricks that I can almost do. Langa stays close, his warmth seeping into my side. The school is still mostly empty, only a few teachers and students trickling in. The moment feels... nice. Comfortable.
Without really thinking, I shift my hand slightly, searching for his. When my fingers brush against his, I hesitate for a second before gripping it properly. Langa squeezes back, and my heart stumbles over itself.
I don't think I'll ever get used to this feeling.
"Reki, we have school in five minutes."
I groan, dramatically flopping onto him. "But I don't wanna goooo."
Langa sighs but lets me stay there for a moment before prying me off. "Come on, we can hang out tonight. It's Friday, and you can sleep over."
I blink up at him. "...You should've led with that."
Langa smirks. "I'll remember that for next time."
"Fine, fine. I'll text my mom later." I drag my feet as we head inside, changing into my school shoes. "I'll see you in third hour. Love you, bye."
"Bye, love you."
The words come easy now, but they still make my heart do a weird little flip.
School drags. Like, really drags. Every class feels like it lasts ten years, and by the time the final bell rings, I practically sprint out the door.
"LANGAAA!!" I shout, spotting him by the gate.
He chuckles. "Hi, Reki. Where's your headband?"
"Oh, took it off. It was hot in homeroom." I pull it out of my bag as we start walking toward his house. When we stop at a crossing, I glance at him, a mischievous grin forming.
Before he can react, I slip my headband onto him, adjusting it until it sits just right.
Langa blinks at me, confused. "Uh—"
I giggle. "You look cute. Keep it on."
His face turns pink, but he doesn't take it off.
By the time we reach his house, Nanako welcomes us in like usual. "Hi boys, how was your day?" she asks, handing us our plates.
"Good," we reply in unison.
Dinner is mostly quiet, until Langa suddenly reaches up, tugging at the headband. "Reki, you can have this back, you know."
I stop him before he can take it off. "Nope. Keep it. You look so cute with it on."
His ears turn bright red.
And, as if on cue, Nanako walks in, smirking as she lifts her phone. Oh no.
"I love you," I whisper in his ear, just to mess with him.
Langa completely malfunctions. His whole face turns red, and he practically chokes on his food. "I—uh—"
Nanako cackles. "Oh, I'm definitely recording this."
I snicker, barely containing my laughter as Langa buries his face in his hands.
Then, out of nowhere, he blurts, "I love you too!" practically shouting it.
The whole room goes silent.
Then, we all burst out laughing.
And honestly? I wouldn't trade this for anything in the world.
