Sunsets and Skatebaords

The sun was beginning to set, casting a golden glow over the empty skate park. The air smelled faintly of concrete and warm asphalt, and the rhythmic sound of wheels rolling over smooth pavement filled the silence.

Reki kicked up his board, catching it with one hand before dropping it back down with a grin. "Alright, Snow, let's see what you've got."

Langa, standing a few feet away, raised an eyebrow. "You really want to challenge me?"

"Duh." Reki spun his board under his foot. "I mean, I did teach you everything you know, so it's only fair if I remind you who's boss."

Langa smirked, setting his board down. "Okay. First to land a clean kickflip five times wins."

Reki huffed. "Easy. You're going down."

"Winner gets to pick what we do after this," Langa added, casually pushing off and skating backward.

Reki narrowed his eyes. "You're awfully confident for someone who couldn't even ollie properly a few months ago."

Langa shrugged. "You were a good teacher."

Reki felt his face heat up at the compliment, but he quickly masked it with a scoff. "Flattery won't save you, dude. Let's do this."

They spent the next fifteen minutes going back and forth, taking turns attempting kickflips. Langa, of course, made it look effortless—his movements smooth, almost weightless, as if gravity simply didn't apply to him.

Reki, on the other hand, was getting frustrated. He knew he could land this trick—he'd done it a thousand times before—but every time he tried, his balance was just slightly off. On his fourth attempt, the board flipped too fast, and he stumbled on the landing.

"Ugh! What the hell, man?" Reki groaned, shaking out his legs.

Langa rolled up beside him. "You're overthinking it."

"No, I'm just—" Reki paused, then frowned. "Okay, maybe I am."

Langa smiled a little, nudging Reki's shoulder with his own. "Relax. It's just us. No pressure."

Reki exhaled, shaking out his arms. "Alright, alright. One more try." He set his board down, took a deep breath, and pushed forward. As he approached the spot he'd been landing on, he bent his knees, popped the board up, flicked his foot just right—and this time, he landed perfectly.

Langa clapped. "There you go."

Reki grinned. "Hell yeah! That's what I'm talking about!"

Langa rolled his eyes, but there was a fondness in the way he watched Reki celebrate. "That makes four for you. One more and we're tied."

Reki placed his hands on his hips, eyeing Langa. "You're enjoying this, aren't you?"

Langa shrugged. "Maybe."

Reki sighed dramatically. "Man, if only you sucked at skating, this would be way easier."

Langa chuckled. "You wouldn't like that."

"Yeah, yeah, whatever." Reki lined himself up for his last attempt. He had to land this one. He had to—

Before he could even pop the board, a pair of arms wrapped around his waist from behind, pulling him into a sudden, unexpected hug.

"Wha—Langa?! What the hell, man?"

Langa rested his chin on Reki's shoulder, voice calm and steady. "You're too tense. You need to loosen up."

Reki, very aware of how close Langa was, felt his brain short-circuit. "I—uh—I was about to go, dude—"

"I know," Langa murmured, not letting go.

Reki swallowed hard. "Then why are you—"

"You were gonna mess up again."

"Oh, screw you."

Langa chuckled against Reki's shoulder before finally stepping back. "Okay, now go."

Reki groaned, shaking off the warmth lingering from the hug. "If I mess this up, it's your fault."

He pushed forward again, trying his best to focus, but his heartbeat was still a little unsteady from the way Langa had just—just casually hugged him like it was nothing. He took another breath, bent his knees, flicked the board, and—

Landed.

Perfectly.

"Hell yeah!" Reki pumped a fist in the air before turning to Langa with a smug grin. "Tied. Looks like we both win."

Langa skated over, stopping just in front of Reki. "Nope. I win."

Reki scoffed. "What? We're literally tied."

"I never said what the tiebreaker was." Langa smirked. "And the tiebreaker is... who has the most fun."

Reki blinked. "That's the dumbest thing I've ever—"

Before he could finish, Langa reached out and took Reki's hands in his own, pulling him just a little closer. Reki almost tripped over his own board in surprise.

"Wha—Langa?"

Langa's expression softened. "You get too caught up in proving yourself. But I think you forget that skating is supposed to be fun."

Reki's breath hitched slightly. Langa was standing way too close, and his hands were warm, and the way he was looking at him—

Reki quickly looked away, cheeks burning. "Okay, okay, I get it, you win."

Langa tilted his head, amused. "Just like that?"

Reki scowled. "Shut up."

Langa laughed before giving Reki's hands a small squeeze. "Let's get food. My treat."

Reki's heart stuttered at the gentle pressure around his fingers, but he forced himself to act normal. "Well, if you're paying, I guess I can let this loss slide."

Langa smiled, still holding his hands. "Good."

And for the first time in a while, Reki forgot about the competition. He forgot about proving himself.

Because right now, standing under the fading sun with Langa holding his hands like it was the most natural thing in the world—

He didn't need to win.

He already had everything he wanted.
