THE WHOLE STORY

"WHAT is all this?" Chris pointed at the chess board in Stiles' room, causing everyone to gather around it. "What are these sticky notes for?"

Andrea sent a text to the rest of the group not too long ago, informing them to meet at the Stilinkis' house because Stiles showed up there. Unfortunately, the boy was already gone by the time they got there, leaving them to search his room for any clues.

"This is what Stiles used to try and explain to me about all of you."

Allison studied the board carefully, "Well maybe it's a message from Stiles—the real Stiles."

Andrea's hand found a fallen pawn, frowning upon noticing the name written on the sticky note of it. It was Isaac.

"Do you think there's any reason my name's on the king?" Derek questioned, his eyes glued to the edge of the board where the king was.

"Well, you're heavily guarded," the sheriff murmured.

"Though, you're one move from being in checkmate," Lucas stated, picking up one of the pieces and moved it to where the king was—checkmate.

"It's not a message from Stiles," Chris stated. "It's a threat from the Nogitsune."

Realization seemed to have also struck Allison, "He's at the loft. That's what he's trying to tell us. And he wants us to come there."

"Night's falling," Derek pointed out, an important detail since they were also facing the Oni.

"This couldn't sound any more like a trap," Andrea commented.

Noah shook his head, "I don't think it is."

Chris furrowed his brows, "I think your opinion might be slightly biased, sheriff."

"Hear me out," he argued. "What we're dealing with here is basically someone who lacks motive—no rhyme or reason, right?

"Meaning what?" Lucas questioned.

"Our enemy is not a killer," Noah stated. "It's a trickster. The killing is just a by-product."

"That's one way to put it," Andrea murmured under her breath.

"If you're trying to say it won't kill us, I'm not feeling too confident about that."

"It won't," the sheriff insisted. "It wants irony. It wants to play a trick. It wants a joke. All we need to do is come up with a new punchline."
