Seeing all the "research" in the basement really got you thinking. You couldn't understand it even after Gavins explanation and tried not to think about it. Now that it was morning, they had to think of something. You woke up and came downstairs to see that breakfast was made. After you were given your food, they began talking. "The roads have been cleared. What's the move, now" Alex asked.

"I can make a call to CPS and they can take care of her and the local police can take care of her parents" Gavin replied.

"Oh, what a great idea" Alex said sarcastically. "Lets just say, "Ok, kid, were tired of you and were gonna let someone else deal with you". Do you hear yourself"?

"Do you think this is a suitable environment for a child"?

"Sure"! Gavin rolled his eyes. "My father brought me here all the time when I was a kid. It was fun then, it's still fun-"

"Are you seriously comparing this whole operation as fun"?

"Yes! Were hunting a monster and we'll be famous"!

"James, please knock some sense into him" Gavin pleaded. James only laughed softly as he was still drinking his coffee. "Alex" James said getting serious, "We have to do the right thing here. I don't like the idea any more than you do but it's what's best for her".

"No, trust me, it's not" Alex replied darkly. "I know what it's like". Both Gavin and James shared curious glances to each other and now focused on Alex and you were paying attention to the conversation as well. "I remember some of it. I was raised in a group home with other boys until I was eight and it was a fucking nightmare. Then I was finally adopted and I thought things were finally getting better but, my mom and dad..." Alex didn't want to say much more and could see that James and Gavin were looking more concerned. "They divorced and it turned into a fight over who would get me and... My mom wanted me for child support. That's it! But my dad actually gave a shit about me. He would take me to this cabin and teach me to hunt and fish and archery and..." Alex sighed in anger. "Well, you get the point. The point is, I know how they are. If you want to throw her there, then your no better than her parents".

Alex threw his glass cup on the ground, making it shatter and walked outside the house and slammed the door behind him. Both Gavin and James stared at each other in shock. "I-- I had no idea-"

"No one did" James replied. "Just give him a moment to cool off". Gavin went to pick up the glass shards of the smashed cup and James took your now empty plate from you. You stood up on your chair and could see Alex heading towards the lake to sit down. You didn't understand what just happened but you knew that Alex looked upset. "Is he mad at me" you asked.

"No no no, he's not, (y/n)" James said. "He just needs a moment alone, that's all". You didn't believe that and you looked back out the window to see him by himself throwing small rocks into the water. You got down from your seat and opened the door to go to Alex which made James try to stop you but you already made it over to him. "Hi" you said shyly. Alex turned his head and didn't respond but then looked back at the water.

"What is she doing-"

"Hold on, James" Gavin said, stopping James from leaving to get you. "Just wait a minute". They both looked to see you take a seat beside him. "Are you mad at me" you asked to Alex.

"No" he replied quickly. "You didn't do anything. I'm just... I just think that my fellow comrades are a bit stupid is all". You giggled at his remark and he couldn't help but smile. "I don't think you understood what was said in there. Did you"?

"No".

"Good, I don't want you to know but I do want you to know this". You looked up to him. "I got your back. And for as long as I can, I'll make sure you'll be safer with us. Maybe, you can help us find your friend"?

"But you hurt-"!

"I know I know, I'm sorry. But you have to understand that we thought he was hurting you. You do know what he is, don't you"?

"Yes".

"Then you understand why we did that, right"? You shrugged. "I know you don't get it, but just know that I got your back, ok"?

"Ok".

James and Gavin were watching from afar and when Gavin looked at his watch, it was time to make the call to CPS but James quickly stopped him. "Why"?

"I'm gonna have to take his side now, Gavin. It isn't fair to her-"

"Let me reiterate that this is not a suitable environment for a child. Alex is out of his mind to keep her around! She would be put in more danger-"!

"Gavin" James said calmly but it was also enough to make Gavin stay silent. "I know it sounds insane to keep her around but Alex said it himself. If we just give her to CPS, they'll only throw her into a group home. The least we can do is offer her protection until this whole thing is sorted out".

"You know that it'll be impossible to keep her safe when that creature tried to-"

"Dimitri" James corrected.

"Sorry. You know that it'll be impossible to keep her safe when Dimitri tried to steal her. How do you even expect a child that young to protect herself"?

"That's why I'm here". James then looked out the window and saw that Alex was teaching you how to skip rocks and it was one of the very few instances where Alex seemed like he was actually happy from the time he knew him. "That's why were here". James then looked back to Gavin. "I know that we were doing something insane but I know that we can protect her".

"James, this still doesn't seem like a rational thing to do-"

"Trust me". Gavin sighed and took a glance out the window to see you and Alex skipping rocks. Gavin was definitely the smartest one in the trio and knew this was completely irrational but because James was considered the leader, he submitted but also knew that he would do his best to keep eyes on you. "Hey". Both James and Gavin looked to doorway and saw Alex with you beside him. "Are we ready to go"?

"Go where" you asked.

"Our morning search" Alex said excitedly.
