(3) Realization

Dimitri had finished the cooking but kept it on the fire for when you would wake up so that way it would be nice and hot. You slept peacefully on the many animal furs, all tucked in and cozy. He sat near you, watching you sleep. You looked so peaceful. He couldn't help but smile at how innocent you were and how peacefully you slept. His smiled faded to a frown when he thought about your injuries. They were very bad. He thought about what would've happen if he didn't save you. You could've been eaten by a bear!

But he didn't frown any longer when he reminded himself that he did indeed save you. But there was one thing that he was worried about. Would other humans come looking for you? You were a child after all. A human child. That was a lot to unpack for him. But nonetheless, he accepted the challenge. While he was observing a new object he found while hunting, he saw you stir and slowly open your eyes. You sat up, rubbed your eyes and saw Dimitri smiling and taking the meat off the fire.

"Hungry"?

You nodded. "Alrighty, well it's still hot so be careful when you eat it". You nodded and grabbed your doll. Dimitri gently took the deer meat off the spit and placed it in front of you. You hesitantly took a bite but it tasted amazing. You munched away on your food and Dimitri smiled. He's never cooked for other people before. It was nice to have someone else enjoy it. When you finished, you looked outside and saw that it was still bright outside. Maybe Dimitri would play with you? "Dimitri"?

"Yes"?

"Can we play"?

"Hmmm. Alrighty, but let me check outside just to make sure that there's no one nearby. Wait here". You nodded your head and Dimitri slithered outside to search the area. You decided to play with your doll for the time being. It didn't take long for him to return. "It's safe, come on. We can go down by the stream". You stood up and followed Dimitri out of the cave. He made sure that you stayed beside him while you both were getting down to the stream.

The stream was littered with multiple colored leaves, sticks and rocks. It was a very peaceful place. "What would you like to do"?

"Play hide and seek"!

"Alrighty, lets see if you can hide from me. Ready"? You nodded your head. "GO"! You took off running carefully and started hiding behind trees. You could hear Dimitri still counting as you smiled in anticipation. "20! Prepared or not, I'm coming"! You covered your mouth to stop yourself from laughing only to hear him say, "Come out, come out my little one, wherever you are"?

You could hear Dimitri moving branches out of the way and you could hear his breathing. "Hmmm, I thought she came here? Perhaps she's... Over here? No? Hmmmm".

You then saw Dimitri slither closer to you and he smiled. He quickly went around your tree and you took off running. It didn't go unnoticed by him and he quickly caught you. "I got you! You thought you could hide from me, little one"? You laughed as you tried to escape his grasp. He smiled and tossed you up into the air which resulted in you squealing with joy. It made his heart swell with happiness. After a bit more tosses he said "Alright alright. Let's see if you can find me in this game. I must admit, I'm very good at this game. But don't worry, I'll go easy on you".

You smiled and when you were put down you covered your eyes but you could only count to ten. Not wasting a second, Dimitri slithered off. He wasn't going to go too far and would try make a little bit easier for you. He was fun. It was the first time he's ever had fun with a human and he could see the future before him. It may sound unrealistic to him but he was already considering that you were his child. His child. It did sound unrealistic to accept a random child so quickly as one of his own but it's also extremely unrealistic to have a mythical snake creature as a caretaker.

But then again... Who's going to hear about this?

Your parents are out of the picture since they were both physically and emotionally abusive to you, they never took you to any doctor appointments and whenever the police came by, they would hide you immediately and threaten you into silence. Your parents never had guests come over and you didn't have friends. They didn't have to worry about people seeing you. While this particular situation of having a caretaker that isn't human, lives in a huge cave, has little to no experience or knowledge about humans and not realizing that humans are social animals and can't just have one person to talk to or socialize with is really worrisome.

But... At least he cares about you. He will understand this someday but right now, he just wants to enjoy this time with his new child.

Ok... I honestly don't know what to say. Do people actually like this? With working on my other stories, trying to get back to school, having my house go through renovations and still helping my family (mainly my mother) means I don't have much free time as I used to. This story is pretty bad but I'll just leave it up and update it from time to time and see what happens.
