The sky was grey and gloomy. Light droplets of rain kissed the open screen door of the castle. Sesshomaru walked to the opening, clay pot in hand, and stared outside. No matter how many times he guzzled down the sake to numb himself, the feeling did not last for more than a couple of hours. Because of this, he continued to drink when he felt his heart returning. The concoction not only made his mind numb but made his body expel great amounts of energy trying to heal itself from the effects.
He lifted his nose to the scent of the oncoming downpour. All he could smell was rain, dirt, and wet wood. He was grateful for the loss of the smell of his other surroundings. No scent to remind him of her. No flowers, trees, or sweetness. He walked into the middle of the courtyard and raised his arms slightly welcoming the heavy rain to come.
An abrupt wave of rain fell from the sky. The rain washed the smell of sake off his skin, but he hoped for more. He only wished that the rain washed away more of his grief and regret. The heavy rain tuned out most of his senses. All he could feel was the sky's tears, the tears he wish he himself could shed.
His eyes shadowed. He knew it was her standing behind him. He didn't hear or smell her but he felt her presence. Her aura alone was unmistakable.
"Have you come to say goodbye Rin"
She took a few steps towards him and embraced the back of his waist. He didn't have the strength to tell her no or push her away. If anything he wanted to savor this moment in the rain. If they were finally parting ways then he wouldn't deny himself from her touch. She wounded him. All he wanted was to seclude himself to lick his wounds but here she was... How could he not chase her when she dangled herself in front of him.
"I'm not here to say goodbye Lord Sesshomaru"
Hearing his name so formally was like another stab to his heart.
"Release me" he demanded.
She loosened her grasp and took a step back. When he turned to face her she couldn't see his eyes.
"I SAID RELEASE ME!" he shouted.
She was stunned by his change in tone until she understood what he meant. She took a step forward to comfort him before she realized he casually collapsed on his back over the wet soil. He spread out his limbs and placed one arm over his eyes.
Sesshomaru let out a deep sigh.
His body stiffened when he felt her body curl against his on the ground. She wrapped her hand around his cheek and put her lips close to his ear.
"I could never... "
Her answer sent shivers down his spine. He swiftly sat them both up grabbing her by the sides of her arms so she could face him.
"Why Rin! Tell me why!"
Her eyes darted to the side.
"Because I love you..."
"Nonsense! I know as well as you do that, that can not be true! STOP LYING TO ME!" His eyes grew crimson and his fangs began to grow.
Before he could reach his full demon form all his energy left his body and he went unconscious.
Rin picked him up and placed him indoors. She undressed his wet clothing and placed a dry black robe on him. His body was burning up from all the alcohol so she brought a bowl of cool water and a rag next to him. She wiped his face and chest down, being careful not to disturb him. When she reached his neckline, his wrist caught hers.
