Luke;

The truth about love is that it’s a catastrophe but you are raised upon it being a fantasy. You hear the stories about the ballrooms and glass shoes but never the arguments that abolish connections.  You never hear about the girl who takes the bruises like kisses and suffocation like hugs. Or two men having slurs thrown at them as they plead for their love to be more than a laugh. It’s when you grow older and see further behind the beams of sunlight and blue skies that prince charming isn’t always the saving grace.

I wasn’t an expert when the topic of love came along. I stumbled over my feelings, feared commitment and was selfish. One thing that I did have a basic knowledge on was that love wasn’t fair at all because if it was, the girl who held my heart in the palm of her hands would have never parted from me. And I know with these beliefs that wandered my mind, I was the biggest hypocrite to walk the streets. Because I was with a girl who I knew was in love with me but I didn’t care enough to love her.

There was a possibility that my heart once belonged to Tiffany but that had to be true when I was a young teenage boy who was trapped in this illusion that life was remarkable. Now, destructed by the changes I went through when I grew up, I knew I didn’t love Tiffany. There was no denying that her features were attractive and she had a good heart but I just wasn’t appealed to that. She didn’t belong to me and I knew deep down in her bones she knew that too.

“Baby, you could at least smile once.” Tiffany complained but managed to keep her staged grin for the electronics.

“Why? I’m starving and we just got our sushi. These old greasy men and annoying preteens can wait till I am satisfied.” I responded, watching a frown cast over her lips.

Tiffany pushed back a strand of her golden curl, her tongue slid across the dryness of her lips before she brought her fork to her mouth. She chewed slowly, hazel eyes captivated by the screen of her phone. A small breeze slid across my bare arms, taking away some of the heat that lingered along my skin.

“I’m going back to the house after this, Tiffany.” I told her after drinking some of my lemonade.

She pouted. “We were supposed to go shopping for Avery’s party next weekend.”

“I have three photoshoots tomorrow and I have to go to the studio anyways to finish this song I was writing with Hood. And Dammit Tiff I told you yesterday I can’t go to that whore’s nude party” I explained, disregarding the sadness that filled her eyes.

“You never have time for me anymore.” Tiffany heaved a sigh, looking over at the flashing cameras behind the bushes outside the restaurant.

“That’s not true, you just catch me at the wrong times.” I argued.

Tiff groaned. “Luke, I always make time for you and I’m pretty busy. You know being a model doesn’t give me the most flexible schedule.”

Her words generated a burst of irritation into my voice. “Well Tiffany once you become the lead singer in the biggest band in Australia, the U.K and the U.S give me a fucking call.”

As always, she backed down. “You’re right, I’m sorry. I love you.”

----

The sun leisurely fell behind the soft clouds, a memorizing lilac color spreading across the early night sky. There was a shift in the temperature, the air brushing against my body was cooler than earlier which resulted to a blanket being wrapped around me. The only noise that surrounded my sleepy self was Calum strumming his guitar and Ashton humming along to it. For once, peace was an emotion I could detect within me but by the time the sun said hello I know that feeling would disintegrate like the stars.

“How was your day Luke?” Calum asked, his fingers still on the strings.

I parted my lips, thinking if honesty should have surfaced my answer. “Okay. It was okay.”

“You were with Tiffany right?” Ashton inquired, fixing the bandana that held back his curls.

I exhaled in annoyance. “Sadly, yeah.”

Calum chuckled. “Oh c’mon! She’s not that bad.”

“Yeah but she’s not Bl- Blaze.”

Still, the name hurt to pronounce knowing she’d never stand by my side proudly like she once did.

“Hey at least you saw her la-“

“You what Luke?” Ashton cut in, shocked with his accidental discovery.

“Yeah Ash, I saw her but it wasn’t a big deal. We just talked.” I said.

“Talked.” He repeated, leaning back into the chair.

Tension was quick to rise between us as he stayed quiet for a minute, his eyes scattering along the scenery. Calum stopped playing his instrument, noticing the swing of attitude. I felt Calum’s nervous stare but decided not to react to it.

Ashton broke the anticipation. “Since when do you and Blaze just talk, Luke? That never happens and you know that damn well. You guys fucked, didn’t you?”

“She’s not like that,” Calum weaseled into the conversation. “Well not anymore.”

“How would you know that Cal?” Ashton grumbled. “You barely talked to her that time you saw her. I actually had a decent conversation with her the night before the sign-“

“You what?” My voice unintentionally raised but the glare I gave Ashton was something I did on my own.

“That’s not the issue, Luke! The problem is that you put yourself in danger by going out in public with no security and was vulnerable in front of her!”

Why the fuck was he so angry?

“I love her Ashton, what did you expect me to do, honestly? After three years of wondering how she looked, how she sounded, if she got better, I was finally able to see her. I needed to talk to her. I needed and wanted the answers to the questions that kept me up at night.”

Ashton sighed, rubbing his hazel eyes. “Are you ever going to see her again? Wait, does she even know that we’re living in L.A?”

“We did talk about a friendship and no I didn’t get around to it.” I trailed off, knowing he would use that confession against me.

Ashton groaned and Calum raised his hands in exasperation. “Look Ashton, I know you didn’t want this but can you really blame the kid?”

Calum and Ashton looked at each other, acting as if they were at a strain of words. Curiosity surfaced my thoughts but I kept mute, observing the communication between their eyes.

“It’s just.” Ashton paused. “I saw you guys destroy each other once and I don’t really want to watch for a second time.”

“We change.” I claimed.

“But for the better?”
