Michael paced Tony's restaurant, checking his phone every few seconds for the call that never came. Every time he stared at the small screen his heart would stop for a second. Twelve missed calls from Linda but nothing from Tommy or Tony. What the fuck was going on? They should have called by now. The last time he spoke to either of them was when he left Frankie's bar. Tony had instructed him to stay home, that he wasn't needed at the harbour and that there had been a change of plan but he didn't elaborate.
He tried Tommy's phone again but it went straight to voice mail for the twentieth time. He was starting to feel queasy and knew that something had gone wrong. He stared at Linda's number and felt sick. He had left her at the diner when Frankie had arrived. She looked terrified and confused at Frankie's reaction to seeing him sitting there and when he demanded she tell him how she knew Frankie, all the pieces fell painfully into place.
He felt disgusting and stupid. He knew getting into a relationship was a stupid and dangerous mistake but he couldn't stay away from Linda. She was the best thing in his life and the only thing that made him feel normal in the midst of all of this shit. She was good and kind and pure and he knew he had to keep her in the dark. She knew nothing about him, really. Everything he had told her had been a lie, other than the fact that he worked for the Boston P.D. She was an amazing woman. She helped people for a living but never dreamed that his sister would be one of them. She must hate him and he didn't blame her. He didn't care. Once she was safe. Nobody but Frankie knew about Linda and he intended on keeping it that way.
Frankie
She must be petrified. He had such a terrible feeling that something awful had happened and as he stood there in the darkness, he prayed that his sister was okay and that if he got the chance he would explain everything. He prayed he got the chance.
His phone rang and he nearly dropped it in his hurry to answer. "Hello? Dad? What the hell is going on? Where is Tony?"
The line was silent for a minute, the only sound was his father's steady, raspy breathing. "Tony's dead, Mikey."
Michael felt the blood drain from his face and all he could think about was Frankie.
"What the fuck are you talking about? What happened?"
"Son, listen to me. I'm going to need you to trust me, okay? I'm going to text you an address and you must follow every instruction carefully. This is messy business, but it's necessary. Things have changed and I'm in danger. You're the only one I trust. I need to know that you have my back."
Michael nodded and cleared his throat. "Of course, dad. Anything you need."
"I knew I could count on you son. Now there's some things I've had to keep from you but I promise I'll explain everything but for now all you need to know is that Aidan O'Shea is out for my blood and we need to make sure that doesn't happen. If you do what I tell you to do we'll be okay and I'll tell you what son, we're going to be filthy fucking rich. But you're not going to like what I have to tell you so you just have to trust me, got it?"
Michael nodded again and waited. "It's Frankie, Michael. She- killed Tony. I d-, I don't know what she's planning but she's dangerous son. She was the one who burned down Tony's restaurant ten years ago but she somehow managed to take every thing from Tony's office. There's millions of dollars and a very important list that I need to get. It has the names of some people who could put us away for life. Witnesses to most of my crimes that Tony had been holding over my head. It also has names of vital players, not only Boston, but New York and Chicago too and if I get my hands on it it will ensure our rise to the top. With that list, we'll be unstoppable son. But we have to get it from her because I'm afraid she's going to destroy it all or worse."
Michael could feel his knees getting weak and grabbed onto the bar to steady himself. Tommy didn't give him a chance to respond before he continued.
"Now, Aidan knows this too and he's trying to find her but if he does he'll kill and everyone she's ever known her whether she gives him the money or not. Aidan will stop at nothing now to hurt me and my family, much more than before. She may be dangerous and a fucking rat but she's my daughter. We can't let that happen. We need to protect her. So you're going to have to do something that you might not like but once again, it's necessary."
"Yeah. I'll do it. Just tell me what you need." Michael tried to keep his voice steady as he waited for Tommy to speak.
He nodded along while he wrote down the address on a napkin and closed his eyes when he heard what he had to do.
"So you got all that? Call me as soon as you're done and I'll give you the next address. She won't have a choice, son. She'll understand that this is how it has to be."
Tommy said goodbye to his son and hung up the phone. Michael stood there, frozen in place while he tried to gather his thoughts. He wasn't sure if he had it in him. He wasn't sure of anything anymore but the one thing he did know was that something was off and it made him feel sick.
He fumbled in his pocket and pulled out a small piece of plastic. He removed the back of his phone and battery and replaced the current sim card with the one in his sweaty palm. He switched on the phone and waited impatiently for him to pick up.
It only rang twice before he heard his voice.
"Mike?"
Michael sighed with relief and closed his eyes.
"Yeah it's me. Something's going down. I have instructions and I don't know what's happening yet but I have a feeling it isn't going to end well. I'm going to call you when I know more so keep your phone on. It's bad Mac. They know. They all know everything and no one is safe. I'm gonna need your help tonight so stay alert."
"Yeah sure thing Mike. So where are you headed?"
Michael closed the door of the restaurant behind him and walked to his car. His hands were shaking slightly as he turned the engine on.
"Fucking New Hampshire."
