On a misty autumn night in October 1917, three French soldiers took up a patrol into no man's land. Keeping close together like a flock of sheep, the men advanced under the moonlight. Gradually, the trio fanned out until each was only barely visible to the others in the dense fog. Suddenly, one man grunted, being dragged through the sightless mud. The other soon vanished, leaving one left. He was confronted by a shady figure just in front. Taking the first shot, the Frenchman brought down the stranger, only for his target to arch back up and lunge at him.
