CHAPTER 20

The previous night was one of the most stressful ones our family had. Nang tumawag si Patch sa akin ay pinalipad ko talaga ang sasakyan. Many things ran in my head just thinking about my little sister. 

Nakarating naman kami sa ospital kung nasaan ang kapatid ko. Nang malaman namin na okay lang si Kiana ay nakahinga kami ng maluwag. Wala naman itong natamong sugat o kahit ano. She was fine.

After I talked to Patch and fired her, I realized that I was mad at Formosa more than I am with Patch. I felt heavy as I watched her walk away. Knowing Patch, she would have done everything to save Kiana. 

Pagkabalik ko sa kwarto ay gising na si Kiana.

She was hysterical when she learned I fired Patch. She wanted to go back home immediately. She explained everything to us. What she told us hit me. We were guilty and we know it. Since Patch came in the house, she was the only family member that really took care of her.

If there were times we got home early, binabasahan nito si Kiana. Minsan nga ay tinutulungan pa ni Patch ito sa mga assignments nito. Patch has been doing what we should have been doing.

So we settled everything and went back home. Patch was already leaving when we got there. Nakita ko ang saya sa mukha ng kapatid ko nang sabihin kong hindi na aalis si Patch. I remembered her stories of what they did that day at the mall. Even in a short span of time, Kiana enjoyed being a normal kid with Patch.

Noong una nga ay hindi pa ako naniwala. This is Patch we're talking about. She hates things like this. She hates being sweet. She doesn't like kids. She's hard, stoic and unfeeling. Tila ba ibang tao ang kasama ni Kiana.

Nasa patio kami ngayon kasama ang mga magulang ko.

"We are taking Kiana with us."

"Why?"

"Yesterday got us thinking. We need to spend more time with her. She's young and this is the time she needs us as parents. We feel bad that a stranger is doing it instead of her family."

Inakbayan ko ang ina ko. "I'm happy we had some realizations. I think I misjudged Patch. I should say sorry to her."

"I still don't like that woman. But I can't really deny how many time she has saved you and Kiana."

"Right. I'll talk to her later."

"We will stay there for a while. We will go back when elections come."

"Enjoy your time in the US then. I'll call from time to time."

"I better start packing. Our plane leaves in a day. Bibiyahe na kami sa Manila tonight." Hinawakan ni Mom ang pisngi ko. "Please stay safe, son. Keep out of trouble."

"I will, Mom."

When lunch came, we explained to Kiana that it will be much safer for them to stay abroad for now.

"Promise mo Kuya hindi mo papaalisin si Ate Patch ha."

I offered my pinky finger to my sister. "Pinky promise."

"Are you still mad at her Kuya? Girlfriend mo pa rin ba siya?"

"I'm more disappointed now than mad. And yes, we are still pretending to be a couple."

Yumakap ito sa braso niya. "I really hope I did not break you two up."

Hinalikan ko ang ulo nito. "No baby. We're good."

"I love you, Kuya. Mami-miss kita."

"Kuya loves you too. I'll come visit when I'm free."
