CHAPTER 59

Inayos ko ang suot ni Kylo habang nakaharap kami sa salamin.

"So what is your decision?"

He shrugged. "You'll see."

We have been staying in his house for two months now and I know that the election fever has started. Today is the last day of filing for the candidacy.

"Bakit ba pa-suspense ka pa? Kahit sa akin ayaw mo i-share?"

"It's a surprise." He kissed my forehead.

"I hate surprises."

"I know."

I wore a simple shirt and denim jeans because won't up in the stage anyway. Saka sabi ni Kylo ay informal event naman iyon. He was wearing a collared shirt and denim jeans himself.

He drove to the town's plaza where a lot of people are already gathered. I have seen the election last time and the people supporting their candidates are ecstatic. Today, either Kylo will be running as mayor or as a senator. He has good chances for both positions.

Pinakilala ako ni Kylo sa campaign manager nito. He was happy to finally meet me. Nakikita ko na ito noon pero hindi pa kami nagkakausap talaga.

I settled on the first row of seats below the stage. I watched as Kylo took the podium. I smiled. He was made for this. The screams and cheers of the people are proof of how much they love him.

"Magandang umaga po sa inyong lahat. Mayroon po akong dalawang mahalagang anunsiyo ngayon." He looked around and when his eyes settled on mine, I smiled at him and gave him a thumbs up.

"Bago ang lahat, gusto kong malaman ninyong mahal na mahal ko ang lalawigan natin. Dito ako lumaki kaya napakahalaga ng lugar na ito sa akin. Buo na po ang desisyon ko ngayong paparating na eleksiyon." He breathed in deeply. "Huling termino ko na bilang gobernador at wala akong masasabi kung hindi pasasalamat at hinayaan ninyong pamunuan ko ang lalawigan natin ng ilang taon. Ngayon, napagdesiyunan ko po na...hindi na po ako tatakbo sa kahit na anong posisyon ngayong eleksyon."

SIlence filled the place. Some had sad reactions but what Kylo said silenced the people. Even I was shocked.

"Naniniwala ako na matatalino kayong mga botante at masasabi ko na ang mga tumatakbo sa probinsya natin ay mga taong kayang magpatuloy ng nasimulan natin. Sa ngayon ay may mga bagay lang akong kailangang asikasuhin. Mananatili akong anak ng lalawigang ito. Nandito pa rin naman ako at maari pa rin kayong lumapit sa akin kung may kailangan kayo. Muli, maraming salamat sa suporta ninyo."

The people started clapping their hands. They respected Kylo's decision. I smiled up at him to reassure him that whatever his decision is, I'll be beside him.

"Ngayon, may isa pa akong anunsiyo. Hindi ko alam kung ikatutuwa ninyo pero nakita niyo kung paano nabago ng taong ito ang pananaw ko sa buhay." He looked at me and extended his hand at my direction.

I was looking around to ensure that he wanted me to go up.

"Yes my love. It's you."

Dahan-dahan akong tumayo. Everyone was looking at me. Nang makaakyat ako sa stage ay hinawakan ko ang kamay nito. It was cold.

"Ayokong isipin ninyo na dahil sa babaeng kasama ko ngayon kaya hindi na ako tatakbo. Tulad ninyo, gusto niya ring makapaglingkod pa ako sa inyo." He faced me.

Like a movie in slo-mo, he went down on one knee.

"Chinn, this is not to pressure you. This is me presenting you to the people I have served for a long time. This is also me telling and showing them whom I will be serving in the coming years. You learned to love this place and the people as they learned to love you."

Lumingon ito sa mga tao. "Boto ba kayo sa kanya?"

There was a collective cheer from the people. "Oo!"

"Ano ba sa tingin niyo ang dapat niyang isagot?"

"Oo!"

He looked at me again. "I love you. Mahal kita. Mahal na mahal. Ngayong nakapagpaalam na ako sa mga taong minahal ko, panahon na para magsimula na ako ng bagong yugto sa buhay ko. Will you take me, Kylo Crisologo, former Mayor, former Governor of Nueva Maravilla to be your husband?"

I nodded. "Yes. Oo na oo."

"May nanalo na!" Sabi ng isang lalaki.

We smiled and he slid the ring on my finger.

"Kainan na po!"

The event arranged had food for the attendees. It was more like a fiesta mood all over the place. Masaya ang mga tao kahit hindi na tatakbo si Kylo.

Everybody in the plaza congratulated us.

We ate with the people. Kahit marami nga ang nanghihinayang na hindi na ito tatakbo, nagpapasalamat pa rin ito dahil napaalis at nabuwag nito ang mga malalaking tao sa pulitika na nagpapahirap sa mga tao.

I don't have any doubt why people love him so much.

Habang nagddrive ito pauwi, it dawned on me that we are getting married soon.

"Kylo, nakausap mo na ba ang Mom mo about me?"

He exhaled. That's not good. "I'll marry you no matter what she says. I'm his only son, that should matter to her."

"So she still doesn't like me?"

"I try to work it out with her. Ang tigas niya lang kasi. I haven't talked to her in a while. Si dad lang kasi ite-take over ko na ang negosyo namin."

Sa pagkakaalam ko ay may construction at export business ang pamilya ni Kylo. The province is greatly benefitting from their family because they are exporting products from the province.

"A politician turned businessman?"

"Yeah, not bad at all right?"

"Oo naman. You give jobs to people, you live comfortably. I think you're okay."

At the back of my mind, it doesn't sit well with me that Kylo and his mom are not in the best terms because of me.

"What are you thinking?"

I shook my head. "Nothing. Just things."

"Okay. I will be quite busy in the next days. I still have a few more projects in the office but I will also start handling the family business."

I nodded. "That's fine. I'll figure out something to do."

"Hindi ka ba mabo-bore?"

"I don't think so. I have been living with you for months. I am busy preparing things for you. Nanay Carm trained me well. I'll be fine. I don't know business so I can't help you with that."

He chuckled. "Thank you doing all that. I know you're not used to things like that but you still do it for me."

"I do it because I love you, Kylo. I don't know what other reason will there be."

"I'm lucky to have you."

"As am I."
