It was that feeling in her chest, when something happens out of the blue. It was unexpected, surprising-heavy. Alexis felt her breath hold as it strained her as he said those two words-Red Death. But it was different; she didn't lunge for his head or throw the knife in his skull. She felt pulled, anchored down in her place. Something filled her. Fear? No. Anger? Maybe. But it was something else... something grand. She felt happy.
"Kaden?" Alexis managed to break the words free from her restraint.
The body stood up and turned to face Alexis, who was still firmly glued to her spot. He smiled; a smile Alexis missed; a smile Alexis seemed to have forgotten; a smile Alexis only remembered in her dreams.
"Hey, Alexis," the boy's smile grew wider.
"W-what're you doing h-here?" Alexis stammered as she forced herself to take a step closer.
"I'm back..." Kaden, the boy, said.
"It's been Two years," Alexis said with a frown.
"I know-I've missed you," Kaden said as he walked to her.
"I've missed you too but what happened?" Alexis asked as she admired the floor.
"I'm sorry," Kaden said.
"One minute you were here then the next you were off the border, no one knew where you went... even I couldn't find you," she looked at him and their gazes met and locked.
"I've been um busy," he said putting his hand in his pockets.
Alexis didn't reply.
Kaden frowned and wrapped his arms around her tightly, "I'm sorry, Alexis. Don't be mad at me."
"I tried looking for you... I needed you," Alexis said and she felt a tear trickle down.
"Hey-hey there... it's my fault, I should've told you. Don't cry," Kaden wiped the tear off her cheek.
"I'm not crying," Alexis defended.
"Okay, okay," Kaden chuckled. He missed her; he remembered when she was still so young and cute but now, she grew to be beautiful.
"I've missed you," Alexis said and hugged him.
"I've missed you too," Kaden smiled as he hugged her back.
The two stayed there for a moment, in each other's grips. Alexis only vaguely remembered Kaden, his voice, laugh, and smile, everything almost seemed like a dream to her. Kaden remembered the last time he saw Alexis, still a little girl but a fierce one at that. Seeing her again brought back so much he didn't know he had forgotten.
"So, I've seen you've been busy," Kaden said as they pulled apart.
"Says the one who says they've been busy," Alexis said as she placed the knife back to her kitchen.
Kaden chuckled, "you've done pretty good, nice place you got here."
"Yeah, I got around."
Alexis didn't know what to do. Kaden was an old friend-he was her mentor. After finding Alexis drenched in blood that night, Kaden took her in. The two were closely alike but Kaden, he saw all the potential Alexis held beneath her. He helped her, trained her, got her back to her feet-it was Kaden who saved her.
"You know, when-" Kaden paused when he heard a high beep.
"Oh wait, I have to take this," Alexis said as she pulled her phone, the one with her employers, out.
It was a file of someone; Alexis opened it and shortly reviewed the life of her new target. She called the employer's number. Someone immediately picked up-they've been waiting, she thought.
