The 'Merchant of Venice' is a 16th century play written by 'William Shakespeare'.
In it, a Merchant in Venice named Antonio takes a loan from a moneylender named Shylock to help his friend Bassanio to court Portia, a rich heiress. Antonio defaults on loan paid by Shylock. In return of which, Shylock demand one pound of Antonio's flesh. Now Antonio's life is at stake. Portia, now the wife of Bassanio, dresses as a lawyer and save Antonio.
The story is bound by the threads of love, generosity, friendship and revenge, which are the ideals of Elizabethan Society.
Some of the famous quotes of the play :
1. "You speak of an infinite,deal of nothing"
2." The devil can cute scriptures for his purpose."
3."But love is blind and lovers cannot se the pretty follies that themselves commit."
4. "Tell me where is fancy bred, or in the heart or in the head."
5. " How far the little candle throws his beams,
So shines a good deed in the naughty world!"6. " With mirth and laughter, let the old wrinkles come."
7. "I hold the world but as the world Gratiano, a stage where every man must play a part."
8. " If to do was as easy as to know what were good to do, chapels had been churches, and poor men's cottages prince's palaces!"
9. "All that glisters is not gold,
Often you have heard that told...
Many a men their life hath sold, but my outside to behold...
Guilded tombs do worm infold..
Have you been as wise as bold?
Young in limbs in judgement old.
Your answer had not been inscrolled,
Fare you well, your suit is cold..!"10. " The quality of mercy is not strained,
It droppeth as gentle rain from heaven.
Upon the place beneath: It is twice blest: It blesseth him that gives and him that takes."11." If he lose, he makes a swan-like end, Fading in music: that the comparison May stand proper,
my eyes shall be the stream And watery death- bed for him."12. " In law, what plea so tainted and corrupt,
But being season'd with a gracious voice,
Obscures the show of evil."13. " What a demi-god Hath come so near creation?
The painter plays the spider, and hath woven
A golden mesh to entrap the hearts of men...!"14. "The man that has no music in himself,
Nor is not moved with the Concord of sweet sounds,
Is fit for treasons.."15. "Jessica, look, how the floor of heaven
Is thick inlaid with patines if bright gold;
There's not the small orb which thou behold'st
But in his motion like angels sings,
Still quiring to the young-eyed cherubins;
Such harmony is in immortal souls..!"_____________________________
