Chapter Twenty-Seven

There was a lot of commotion in that house, and Todd couldn't take it anymore. The walls had ears, and the wind had eyes. There was no privacy anymore, and each day felt like a millennium. He counted each day, each hour and each minute.

He felt like Mia was miles away, way out of reach. He was disappointed. Sure, he hadn't been the best fiancé and he cheated (almost), but he loved her. The others never mattered, only she did. She was the one he would always run back to at the end of the day.

He was a coward, a bitch, a fucking cheat. He knew that, and the guilt was eating him alive. He acted as if she wasn't the only woman in the planet, but the thought of having her in another man's arms killed him.

In reality, it's been six days since he last saw her. For some reason, he couldn't face her. It could've been the guilt, or maybe the fear of being rejected. That, he wouldn't take from her.

Love. Love is timeless and ageless. It's forgiving and kind. It's passionate and caring. Did he love her? He sure as hell did.

He decided that it's been too long. He needed to see her. It's been too damn long. He grabbed his car keys and sped off to the police station. The thought of having her there, in a police station killed him. What could he have done? More than he did, of course.

A weekend that was supposed to be fun and adventurous ended up being disastrous and catastrophic. It's funny how his mother always told him that he'd never find anyone to love, anyone worthy. He loved Mia, and she was worth everything.

So he decided that he'd forgive her. He had nothing to lose, and in the end, he would win a jackpot. He was confident. She missed him, and he missed her. They would solve their issues and be happy again. He would bail her out, and then problem solved.

There were so many things he wanted to say to her, so many things he wanted to let her know. One, was that he loved her and would never give her up. Two, was that he wanted her to be his, and his only. Three, he was willing to do anything to stay by her side, and four, he wanted a baby.

Inside a police station was a definite rush. There were cops everywhere, walking up and down the station. Some were eating doughnuts, and some drinking coffee.

He'd never thought he'd end up here for the right reasons.

“May I help you?" a grumpy secretary asked. He thought all secretaries were kind and welcoming. This one proved him wrong.

“Mia-"

“Santiago? The blondie? Follow me."

Blondie? Is that how they knew her as? A blonde? Mia was more than that. He didn't like that pet name one bit. He was about to snap.

He patiently waited in the visitor's room. The walls were white, and there was a chair across him. He couldn't wait to see Mia, see her beautiful face.

Moments later, the door opened. He didn't look that way, he simply stared at the seat in front of him. The smell of unwashed clothes and sweat filled his nostrils. He hoped it wasn't Mia, he would never forgive herself.

When she was sitting right across him, his eyes trailed up her body, starting from her chest. She had dirt stains on her blouse, her neck had stains and looked stiff, and when his eyes met hers, he froze momentarily.

“Mia-"

He was greeted with a slap. She slapped him with all the energy she had left. He was in complete shock now.

“You bastard." she whispered. He looked up at her. He could see the anger in her eyes. Her glare was deadly, poisoning. He had never seen her like this, before. Whatever assumptions he had before, were lost.

“Mia, what's the matter?" he asked, although deep down, he already knew.

“You still have the courage to ask me what the matter is? You're sick Todd, you need help."

Todd looked down. He was extremely embarrassed. What else could he feel? He failed her, and himself. All because he couldn't control himself. Shame crawled all the way to his cheeks.

“What happened between you and Lauren?" she asked, looking away from him.

“She...Mia nothing happened between us! I never cheated on you. She wanted to but I didn't."

“Will it kill you to be honest for the first time?"

“I'm telling you the truth, Mia. Lauren, she's sick. She needs help." Todd said, rubbing his temples.

“So are you, now get out. I'm done with you, all of you as a matter of fact. I've just found out that my family is nothing but shit."

“They love you. I love you."

“I can smell the bullshit coming out of your mouth. Do me a favour and fuck off. Don't ever come back here, ever again. I want you to tell those fuck-ups to leave me alone. I'll rot in here, so let me be."

With those words, she stood and left him alone, feeling guilty and useless. That wasn't Mia. It was something else, something he had never seen before.

Mia had never sworn before Now, she was a cursing bomb. Damn, he was shocked and confused. He didn't know what to do. What a nightmare.

The drive was long. He didn't feel like facing her family just yet. He needed a good amount of booze in his system before he did so. It was time to contact his illegal pals.

He had to forget that anguish. His chest burned, his head pounded and swirled. He felt nauseous. For a man to admit that, it took a lot of courage.

He wasn't a man anymore...

He was a coward.
