When I woke, my whole body hurt. I sat up and tried to stretch my arms, but failed. The handcuffs wouldn’t let me move my hands more than three inches apart. However, I could stretch me legs, since Rory had not cuffed my feet together. I couldn’t see very well with the small amount of light that crept through the cracks in the walls and door. I blinked a few times to adjust my eyes to the dimness of the room. I looked around, really seeing the room for the first time.
The walls were made of planks of wood and the doorway was covered with a makeshift door of sticks and branches woven together. A slight smell of cigarette smoke lingered in the cold air, making me think that the building was probably made by a bunch of teenagers in need of a place to hang out far away from the world. I wondered if they’d be back. If they returned, they could save us. But somehow, I doubted Rory would have brought us here if he thought anyone would return to it.
“Hey,” Scott said, making me jump.
“Don’t do that,” I told him. “You scared me.”
“Sorry,” he said, pushing himself closer to me with his feet.
Scott’s left side was pressed to my right side and I leaned over to rest my head on him shoulder.
“How did you sleep?” he asked.
“How are we going to get out of this?” I said, ignoring his question.
“I don’t know,” he admitted.
“Are we going to die?” I asked, my voice cracking.
“Kitty…” Scott said, not sure how to answer me.
“What if Rory comes back to kill us?”
“I won’t let that happen,” he said.
“What if he has that gun?” I said. “You won’t be able to stop him.”
“I will die before I let him hurt you,” he said, his voice firm.
I lifted my head from his shoulder and looked at him. He turned his head too, looking right in my eyes. He shifted his body so he could take my hands in his.
“Nothing is going to happen to you,” he assured me.
I squeezed his hands tightly, wanting so badly to believe him.
“I promise,” he said.
“Scott,” I whispered.
“What?” he asked softly.
And in that moment I realized I couldn’t live without him, and I crushed my lips to his. Scott kissed me back, needing me just as much as I needed him.
After a minute, Scott pulled away. Tears were running down his face.
“What’s wrong?” I said, worried.
“Nothing,” he whispered.
“You can tell me,” I told him, bringing my hands to him face to wipe away his tears.
“It’s just that I’m so glad that if I had to be locked up, you’re here with me.”
“Don’t say that,” I mumbled. “If it wasn’t for me, you wouldn’t be here to begin with.”
“This isn’t your fault, Kitty,” he said.
“Yes it is,” I replied.
“Oh, Kitty,” he said sadly.
He lifted his arms and brought them over my head, pulling me into a hug.
I pressed myself close to him and prayed that we’d be okay.
