Through the next two weeks Scott and I became friends. I never actually talked to him, but somehow he listened to me anyways. It was like he could look at me and just know what was wrong. Little by little I began to feel better. Scott made sure I ate at least some of the lunch he packed me each day. And he made me not cut as much. When he had found the cuts that laced my arms, he was so upset he could hardly speak. He just looked at me with tears in his eyes then held me as I cried.
Meanwhile, things at home got worse and worse. My dad never noticed anything but Addie anymore. He no longer bothered to call me down for dinner or tell me when it was time to leave for school. To him, I was invisible. In fact, I became invisible to everyone but Scott. He was the only one who ever even looked at me. And since I couldn’t speak to Scott, I didn’t speak at all anymore. Not even to myself.
One Thursday afternoon, I was a little late getting out of my last class as the teacher had held me back. She said she was concerned about how my grades were slipping. By then, I was failing almost every class. I listened to her chastise me, then hurried off to my dad’s car.
But by the time I ran out of school, it was too late. My dad had left without me. It didn’t come as a surprise to me that he had left me behind, but it still hurt. I looked around and saw that all of the busses had left as well, so I would have to walk twenty minutes in order to get home. I sighed and started walking.
When I had been walking for only about a minute, I heard a voice behind me.
“Hey mystery girl, wait up!”
I immediately knew who it was, even without looking. There was only one person who called me that. Scott.
I stopped walking and turned around to face him. I got butterflies in my stomach just looking at him.
“Hey,” he said when he finally caught up to me. “I thought your dad drove you home from school.”
I nodded.
“Well I’m glad you’re walking.”
I looked at him questioningly.
“I get to spend more time with you then,” he told me, blushing a little.
I smiled and blushed too.
“God, you’re pretty when you smile,” he murmured.
I blushed again, embarrassed by his compliment.
“Even though I’ve only known you for a few weeks, I think you’re amazing. Easily the most amazing, beautiful person I know. You’re my best friend… but I think I want you to be more than that.”
I froze. Was he saying that he liked me? That he wanted to be my boyfriend?
“But before I say anything else, I have to know if you feel the same way.”
Did I feel the same way? I hadn’t ever thought about it before. But I did get butterflies whenever I saw him. And I thought he was cute. And he had been so kind to me. But did I want to be more than friends? I looked into his eyes and suddenly I knew.
I nodded, signaling that yes, I did like him as more than a friend.
He smiled at me and grabbed my hand.
“I don’t know what I would have done if you had said no,” he whispered. “I can’t imagine my life without you anymore.”
And then, suddenly, he was bending his face towards mine. I closed my eyes and stood on my tiptoes to close the distance between us. And then we kissed.
