“Kitty,” I heard a voice say, waking me from my sleep.

“What?” I said groggily, opening my eyes.

“Come on,” Scott said. “Let’s not waste our last few hours sleeping.”

“Okay,” I mumbled, rubbing my eyes. “What do you want to do?”

“I just want to sit together,” he replied.

“Alright,” I said, sitting up.

Scott lifted his arms and I slid between them. I leaned back so the back of my head was resting on his chest. I couldn’t see his face, but I could feel his breath tickling my ear.

We sat in silence for a long time, just being together. I felt so safe in Scott’s arms that I couldn’t imagine being murdered in just a few hours.

“Kitty,” Scott finally whispered.

“Hmm?” I said.

“When Rory comes,” he started.

“I don’t want to talk about it,” I said, cutting him off. “I want to live my last few hours feeling peaceful, not terrified.”

“Just let me say this one thing,” he said.

“Fine,” I sighed.

“When he comes,” Scott took a deep breath. “Let him kill me first.”

I immediately pulled Scott’s arms up off of me and turned to face him.

I looked into his eyes, at a loss for words.

“Please,” he said.

“Why?” I asked incredulously.

“I can’t watch you die,” he whispered.

“Oh,” I said quietly, not sure of what else to say.

“I know it’s selfish of me, but please,” he said. “Just let me die first.”

I bit my lip, not able to speak after what he’d just said. I didn’t want to watch him die either. But he had been so good to me the entire time I’d known him. He’d done everything for me, to make me happy. And now he was asking for this one thing. I couldn’t say no.

“Please,” Scott begged.

“Okay,” I breathed, hoping I had made the right decision.

Scott smiled at me a little sadly. I squeezed his hand.

“Did you hear that?” he said suddenly.

“What?” I asked.

“Listen,” he instructed.

I stayed silent and then I heard what Scott had heard. A snapping noise, like someone was walking towards us. It sounded almost identical to the noise we had head before Rory had come to the building before.

I looked at Scott, a panicked expression on my face.

“It’s Rory,” I said. “We’re going to die.”

“No,” Scott breathed. “Not yet. It’s too soon.”

I have to tell him I love him, I thought. Before it’s too late.

“We haven’t had our whole day yet,” Scott said.

“Rory doesn’t care,” I mumbled as I tried to summon the courage to tell him.

The snapping noise grew closer and closer.

Tell him now! I commanded myself. But I was too scared about dying in just a minute to get the words out.

Scott turned to me, looking scared.

“Kitty, I love you,” he said.

It’s now or never! I told myself.

“Scott,” I started.

But before I could say anything else, a figure burst through the door.

My eyes darted to the figure, expecting to see Rory standing there with a big gun. But instead I saw my sister, looking scared. In her hands she held a tiny silver key.

“Addie?” I said incredulously.

“What are you doing here?” Scott asked.

“I came to save you,” she said, holding up the key.

She walked over to us and kneeled down.

“Why?” I asked her.

“My whole family is dead except you,” she said. “I couldn’t just let him kill you.”

She gave me a weak smile and the stuck the key into the lock on Scott’s handcuffs. She twisted the key and the handcuffs popped off of his wrists. Scott rubbed his wrists and gave Addie a grateful smile.

“Unlock Kitty,” Scott said. “Please.”

“Okay,” she said.

But just as she reached for my handcuffs there was a snapping noise outside.

“Rory,” Scott said. “He’s coming.”
