“Okay, she’s not dead,” Scott said quickly.

            “She’s just missing,” I added.

“Do you have any idea who took her?” he asked.

            “No, not really. I mean, I don’t think anyone has a motive…”

“Well, have you noticed anyone acting suspicious?”

“I haven’t really left my house since she disappeared so I wouldn’t know.”

“What about the people in you house?”

“Well the only people that have been here are my dad and Addie.”

            “And?”

“And what?”

“Have they been acting suspicious?” he asked.

“Are you serious? You can’t really be suggesting that it was one of them!”

“Well… I don’t know…”

“But why would they do that?”

“Umm well maybe your dad just got upset or something? As for your cousin, I don’t know why she would do anything to your mom.”

I then realized that I hadn’t told Scott the real story of my messed up family. I cringed at the thought of telling him the truth.

“What?” Scott asked. “What’s wrong?”

“Well there’s a little more to my family than you think.”

“What do you mean?”

I didn’t know how to explain what my dad had done. Just thinking about it made me feel like I was going to cry again.

“Addie’s my sister,” I said, tears prickling my eyes.

“But aren’t you both 16? Wouldn’t that make you guys twins?”

“She’s my half sister. We have different moms.”

“But your parents aren’t divorced… are they?”

“No. My dad cheated on my mom since before I was born. He would still be cheating if the other woman hadn’t died.”

I realized my voice was shaking and took a deep breath to steady it before continuing.

“Since Addie couldn’t live by herself, she came to live with us. I just told people she was my cousin because I didn’t want people to know.”

Scott seemed shocked, like he couldn’t believe what he was hearing. He didn’t reply to what I had just said to him; he just kept staring at the couch.

I waited a moment, but when he still didn’t respond I started to get a little agitated.

“Will you please say something? I mean I just told you this big family secret and now you’re just staring at the couch!”

He looked up at me, his eyes wide.

“Why are you looking at me like that?” I asked.

“Because Addie has a motive.”
